Bagnalls Beach is probably the beat spot in a noreaster .
Anyone have any southerly spots around the Nelson Bay area?
Trying to avoid the drive to Hawks Nest.
I haven't looked at a map but I wonder if Soldiers Point would work..If you can find somewhere it wouldn't be a good place to break gear as you'd get blown to Tea gardens side but..Is there anywhere around Lemon Tree passage that would work?
Fingal Bay
- Tack out in the corner near the boat ramp if you don't want to head through the beach break
Shoal Bay
- Launch and head out towards Hawks Nest... once you get off the beach past the moorings the wind starts to bend in (yes in s southerly)
Fly point
- First beach heading east past Dalbora Marina. Tricky launch but is straight cross shore in a southerly. From there you only have to head out 200 - 300 metres and your in the bay sp any wind will work. Just remember to head up wind on your last run so you can bare off to get into the launch site
Soldiers point is better in South Easterly rather than a full Southerly due to wind shadow. The reserve at the eastern end of Ridgeway Ave has a long wide beach good for launching. It can get fairly rough between there and Boondaba island when wind vs tide, but smoother between there and Corlette. Fingal Bay is good fun in a Southerly.
I am heading up to Soldiers Point tomorrow for a few days. Have made a sacrifice to the Wind God by cleaning the oven this morning.

Four days of great noreasters at Nelson Bay/Bagnalls Beach this week pity to be leaving just as the southerly pattern is settling in.Soldiers Point is the southerly spot according to the locals.
Launching from the beach opposite the Soldiers Point Bowling Club is best in the Southerly for the cleanest breeze. Watch out for the big old turtle that lives between there and Soldiers Point. He moves slowly! Just back from a week including 5 days of sailing around there, great winds this year.
