Aloha,
Will be driving from Melbourne to Byron Bay along the NSW coast Dec10-Jan11.
What are the must-sail spots between Merimbula and Byron Bay and am I going to be okay with my JP RWW 74L and 4.0 - 5.4m sails?
How's the wind in Dec-Jan?

You can hope for 2 or 3 days of 15-20K NE around Sydney and a weekly 25K S/SE which can sometimes blow for 2 days. Gerroa always worth a look. Skip Sydney and look at Birubi (Anna Bay) in NE, Port Stephens (NE/SE) & Old Bar (Taree) in NE. Ozwindsurf online mag has good review of mid-north coast - issue 1 or 2? and Skenners head (N Ballina) is great in southerly. Around Byron can be OK but is better for surfing. Currumbin (Qld) good in SE and X-on in NE, worth the drive from Byron if SE for a day or two. December usually better as Jan can often be too humid, the water too warm and the NE doesn't build. Borrow a light wind wave board if you can. Hope this helps!

Summer?

Anywhere from Jervis Bay to Wollongong will the go. The main wind direction in summer is NE which in a good summer will blow for 3 to 4 days followed by a strong Southerly change. You can usually time the exact arrival of the Southerly.

here a short list of spots:

Gerroa (NE): If it's blowing NE a little bit futher north you'll have a good day. If it's 25 knts NE further North you'll have a nuclear day. The NEer usually get's funnelled through here. 4.0 days are quite common in a good summer.

Shoalhaven Heads (NE): This essentially on the same beach as Gerroa only that it's about 10kms further South. If the water is flat in Gerroa you'll usually find a good wind swell here. The NEer is also usually a bit more consistent here.

Warrilla (NE): Warrilla can often deliver a nice wave in a North Easter when there it's flat in Gerroa.

Windang (S to SSW): On a good day this spots can rival most other wavesailing venue in the world.

Corrimal (NE): If it gets to windy in Gerroa Corrimal can often deliver awesome 25 knts down the line wave sailing.

In Sydney you have Wanda beach in a North Easter. Then there is also Botany Bay for Bump and jump action. The NEer is usually the strongest near the airport runway.

Hope this helps.
