Hi, I am moving to Sydney (from Hobart), following my wife with a job at Macquarie Uni.
We are thinking of living between there and the beach.
Any options? I like sailing in seabreeze and (small) waves.
Any suburbs to avoid?
Thanks.![]()
I am sure there are references to previous posts ?
Ok I'll give it a go.
Good Places
Anywhere east from Mac. Uni to the Ocean is good. Most of the inner west if you're into cosmopolitan living
Places to avoid.
Anywhere you can afford is usually a 'bad' place - seriously![]()
Best you look around and then post the names of the burbs you're thinking of would be easier for all.
Note Bad = a dodgy 'hood' or to far from water.
re sailing pretty straight forward:
Seabreeze:
Botany Bay - Flat water
Wanda - Waves
Long Reef - Waves but wind usually fluky and much less on the southside
Southerly winds:
Botany Bay - Choppy flat water
Wanda - cross onshore waves
Bondi Beach - cross onshore waves (Dan 'skinny boy' Berry sails there from time to time)
Long Reef - cross onshore to cross off depending on direction
Makaha - really just around the corner from Long Reef, great wave break if the wind is S
Westerly winds:
Kurnell - coppy flat water, works in NW to W
La Perouse - coppy flat water, works best in a SW
Shops:
Windsurf and Snow is up in Narraben near the golf course.
one of the guys would have most likely been Dan as he lives around the area and according to him: "it's not that gusty in a southerly until the swell start picks up."
Not sure about their sail sizes... I sailed down at Botany Bay with a 4.2 and was plenty overpowered in the gusts... Juretic family was there as well... I think Jason was out on a 4.5.
sadly didn't have the time to go down to Bondi...
LeStef,
Another tip for Sydney. In summer we get the southerly changes running up the coast usually after a few days of good NEer seabreezes.
You can actually time the arrival quite well... from my observation is takes about 90 minutes for the change to reach Sydney from when it arrives at Kiama and about 30 to 40 minutes from Belambi Point. (give or take 10 minutes) Not sure why but this formula works everytime... plus the the Belambi Point wind reading will give you a good indication what size sail to rig before the change arrives. Had plenty of great sailing days using this formula.
Hi Stehsegler
Thanks for the tips. Looking forward to being back in Sydney. Mostly sailed on Botany and a couple of time at Wanda last year. Would be great to sail off Bondi this time.
Cheers,
chris
