Gday Folks
I am planning a move to Sydney for work in the next few months.
I am a pretty regular windsurfer here in WA and have a big range of gear for slalom/speed and waves/bump and jump .
I plan to live in the inner west so will probably try sailing in Botany bay first and go from there.
What gear am I likely to use in NSW?
I need to reduce the size of my collection to fit into a sydney size pad!!!!
hey slappa, ha welcome to sydney, botany is slalom, to bump and jump sailing, sydney and surrounding areas can accomadate all styles of sailing, im assuming on average we do alot more light wind sailing compared to wa, ha, inner west huh, bring a gun, c ya soon
slappa,
as you can see from the current graphs we are in late summer doldrums. rainy/cloudy weather is usually crappy for decent NE seabreezes.
wait until you experience Sydney traffic & inconsistent wind & forecasts and you'll realise why we are quite (wind) frustrated here in the east coast!
Welcome to Sydney buddy.not much better over here. The winds have been fickle lately . You will probably need everthing from formula to small gear Happy Sailing. P.s. try Kurnell about a hours drive from the inner West, works in almost any wind direction. ![]()
As a fellow Newbie to Sydney I'd reckon on a higher volume waveboard with a 4.5, 5 and 5.5 or similar setup, starting at Botany Bay for the best wind/flat water but perhaps Wanda (Cronulla) if you want to get into the waves. Even then, haven't gotten out as much as I'd like....if you want to sail more regularly you'll need a slalom kit with some proper size on it.
Hiya Crew
Thanks for the advice. So it seems that I can expect to use the larger kit a bit more.
My most used sail here in WA is reflex 7.8 and 7.0. So a bigger one might be a good idea too!!
How many days decent sailing have you guys had this summer?
PS. Milsy you know us WA rednecks......I wont bring just one gun!!!!!!
For flat water blasting in Botany you only really use either a 7.8 or 6.2 cammed sails on either a 100 - 120 and a 80-90 board . Only use a 5.5 twice this summer.
Not worth using speed boards most the time as we dont have long enuf flat sections or consistant enuf winds.
With the 7.8 . 6.2 combo ive been out about 3 sails / week on avg with the majority of that on a 115
The most common gear around the inner west of Sydney is a 12'9" Raceboard with 9.5m sail - a fair bit different to WA stuff!![]()
If you are movin to the inner west slappa try Rodd Point. Not to bad in a howling N/Easter but only if you are desperate!![]()
