You will be stoked to see the new GPS free sail at only $50 to join Marmong for affiliation fees and that includes sailing fees for 4 planed days of GPS free sailing when the wind permits and yes we can do it anywhere in lake Macquarie.
Only $10 for extra slalom racing if we race slalom at Marmong on other days .
Any proceeds go to Marmong Point Sailing Club to ensure we have a windsurfing Club now and into the future.
WE need as many People as possible to pay and get involved in a fun cheap new system. Otherwise it won't be here next year. Basically we need people to start paying when they can.
Basically the GPS free race will work like this;
-we will choose a day & location a few days out when a forecast looks good and post on see breeze. I will also email contacts I have.(We do know days we will not be sailing as racing away)
-We can all sail together and we will nominate a 1 hour time frame for people to go for it. All disciplines are in for that 1 hour.
-James has agreed to do the results we will need to give him our files and the person with the best overall result wins.
How much fun will it be every one sailing together.
I expect especially at the sand island we will see many PBS smashed with every one pushing each other and that will be a great thing.
I have not arrange the prize for the overall winner yet, only elected yesterday but will do my best for a good prize .(however fun is the name of the game lots of people sailing together)
FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN FORMULA
We race every Saturday (wind dependant)
Cost is $250 total Includes Marmong membership and all normal race days.
(please note if you pay the $250 you do not have to pay for the GPS series or slalom race days)
If not racing much $90 membership fee plus $10 every race day.
You will need to send me a normal email so I can send Marmong Point account details and the registration form.
Hope I made this clear any questions please don?t hesitate to email or call me.
Thanks

Excellent concept guys. Well done and good luck with it all.
I'll be up when it warms and nothings on in Sydney for sure.
We may even have a bit of a numbers rivalry goin' on between you guys and Storm-Riders this year. Bring it on!![]()
Gday everyone,
ITS ON! HEAT 1 THIS SATURDAY (12th October).
Based on the great looking forecast for Saturday, we are going to hold Heat 1 of the Freerace series at COAL POINT this Saturday.
For those that dont know, the launch at Coal Point gives great runs in a nor-easter - you can choose to sail long distances across in the rolling swell, or focus on shorter, faster runs at the Sand Islands.
The idea is to have a short briefing at 3pm, then be on the water ready to sail for the hour between 3:30pm and 4:30pm. During the hour just sail as fast and as consistently as you can, ideally without stopping.
At the end of the hour, bring me your GPS and I will copy the files off the memory card. If you have a Garmin, please bring along the comms cable and bracket so that I can download it.
The winner of the heat will be the sailor with the best 1 hr average speed for the period from 3:30pm-4:30pm.
Entry is free for existing Marmong Point SC or Stormriders/St George/IYC members. For everyone else we have a special membership deal - $50 covers entry to the 4 x Freerace events plus membership of the AWA, giving you insurance, sail number registration etc.
Look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
Cheers
James on behalf of MPSC.
Great concept and best of luck with this one fellas, hope you get a good turn out. What a great way to compete with your mates and bring in some new people into competitive windsurfing![]()
Looks like it will be a great day. Feel free to get there earlier and do some warm up sailing!
I forgot to mention in my earlier post that you can pay the entry fee directly to me tomorrow. Please bring the correct change if possible.
See you there!
James
First round of the series was run today. Thanks to everyone who took part, and a few others who just free sailed. It was great to see a full carpark.
Winds were initially up around 15 knots but by the planned start time (3:30pm) the wind had dropped right off. The start was delayed for 45 minutes which gave the wind time to fill in. Never as strong as forecast but plenty for everyone to be planing.
Results of the day are below. Congratulations to Ric Black who had consistent speed over the hour with his Raceboard and 15m kite. Unluckily Byron and Lyndon had GPS issues so we couldn't retrieve their data. Bruce and Tibor also sailed consistently, while peak speed of the day went to Hugh, who had to cut his hour short so he could pack up and go to work on night shift. Sue, John and I suffered because we weren't on the water the whole hour due to having to change to bigger gear mid way through.
Thanks again to everyone who came, and hope to see lots more next time. Remember that if you couldn't make it today you're not out of the running, because with a 4 race series we have one drop/discard.
Cheers
James
James!....you and Byron are such good guys doing all this from the goodness of your hearts for us all just to have fun. It is appreciated! I can not see this free gps not succeeding. So much fun and brings more sailors together which is important. So, come on all you free spirits sailing all over the place! Come and join in!....it's definately more fun this way!![]()
Good day but tiring with the big sail up and lots of boat wash when I first went out.![]()
Got there early and 15kts occasionally more at 2ish.It died near the start to about 8kts and I thought it was going to be over so I went out at 3.45 expecting the start to be 4pm ( postponed 15mins). The start ended up at 4.15pm. After ' my' hour ( 4.50pm) my knee was playing up from the longer than usual runs and I could hardly gybe so I came in early. I'd also changed down to the 5.8m for a while as the 7.2m had been a bit much but the wind had died off when I went back out so I was underpowered. Should have left the 7.2m on...
Bummer next time I'll wait till I know what the start time is..
Pity I couldn't use my session stats..10.5kts hr..![]()
Nice to have time to talk to everyone and good to see Karl up. Karl it's a pity you didn't get out a bit later above the point / near the sand islands as it was 15kts consistent with occasional puff of more...If you can get there mid week it's lovely - hardly any boats to chop it up and you have the lake to yourself ( other than other sailors).
Def a shame the guys had GPS issues.
I was a bit overpowered for the first half and a few guys would have been going fast than me, but then it died off and the bigger sail helps
Unfortunately most of the action was over on the other side of the lake behind the sand island but here are a few shots the good wife took.
And big thanks to Byron and James for making it happen, hopefully we get a bigger turnout for the next one
Great shots! It was windier over the otherside so she must have been in a tinnie?
Were you the one on the kite? That board looked amazing! Weird like a sailboard but with a big centre fin.. You looked impressive going past.
It was great fun sailing with other people at the same time competing so come on all you slalom sailors come and join in its cheap and we now also have included Slalom racing at Marmong for free if you join this series.
Had a blast dragging Ric on the flat water at the sand islands nothing in it we were both trying to go as fast as possible I had a peak of just under 31 knots. Its great to race against windsurfers and kites.
Congratulations to all but we want more people to join and as James has said it is a 4 race series with one drop looks like mine was yesterday GPS issues.
Nice photos to thanks.
Rick has been working hard at getting some great prizes as well so you have to be in it to win it.
Yep the one on the kite ;)
Nope the wife was at the boat ramp were we all launched ;)
Cripes it must be a good camera! She did a great job!![]()
How do you cope if you are overpowered with a kite?
Hi guys
My name's David. I am moving from Melbourne to Newcastle in January, and your photos of windsurfing on the lake are exciting. I sailed in the bay here in Melbourne but it's never very flat. Got to go to Sandy Point for speed but it's too far away for the wife. Can I ask about the wind stats? It looks like very large sails.
Cheers,
D
How do you cope if you are overpowered with a kite?
You can loose your edge and makes it harder stay in total control, but still manageable, just not fast.
Kites are very good for depower these days.
Not sure if you've ever looked up close, but as you sheet out the rear lines go slack, this changes the angle of attack and depowers the kite as we push the bar away from the body, not unlike pushing the back of the boom away on a windsurfer really.
if your every at marmong or the next free race day come say g'day and check it out.

Generally 10-20kts NE in summer - often 10-15kts close to the point and then 15kts + above the point into Belmont Bay or over near the sand islands in the channel. It can get 20-25kts on a good day and occasionally 25kts + which is challenging due to the chop close in . Here's a link to a pics from a big NE day ![]()

It can get quite big in a S too.You can probably get to flatter water over the other side in the lee of the sand islands on a big day but I suspect on a day like that it would still get a bit of chop.
