Yes Makaha is way off long reef point and a little spooky. Sure its a long walk up and down headland or a long upwinder from Collaroy. Yep you can sail down to it from Longreef but you got to sail back. There's also a weird crosswave and a few Kiters to get around. But with 11 guys sailing it today it was pretty good. Lots of wind and space to get a fully powered run up to the small peaks comming through means awesome jumping. Even a DTL wave can be had Sven though a little small today. Makaha is a great spot but down break down or have to slog your way home in marginal conditions. I have sailed it on a big day for years preceding another spot but will be awesome
Drive through the golf course and all the way up the hill.
Grab the gear you want to sail with and walk down the headland, rig on the point, then launch and sail straight out.
Theres a channel through the reef on the northern side of the point.
You can walk out till waist deep water then launch.
There is no swell in the channel/cut through even when its mast high out at the break.
Used it pretty regularly when we lived in Manly.
Makaha is a great spot in a southerly and even better in a sou wester.
Oh and if your wondering how I know about the channel... broke plenty of gear out there, swum in plenty of times and then done the walk of shame carrying gear all the way round to Brown Water or the vacant lot !!!
Found the channel after snapping a mast and paddling gear straight into the point
Yeah yeah. I think we have been launching from the channel. There's always rocks to step on it seems. We have been launching on the north side of the reef. There's a cutting nearer to the sand dune. When its small we have been walking out, floating out where the sand joins the actual rock platform rather than launching from the beach. Today was good with Sth to SW winds so you could sail alongside the rockplatform. I to have done the walk of shame all the way back to Collaroy at 6pm in winter. Perhaps I'm getting a little lazy in my old age and only want to sail 50m from where the car is parked.
Was late to the part there yesterday but still got some good rides.
I sailed out from brown water. It's a bit sketchy in a SSW for a 50 meter stretch so you'll definitely need a floaty board. But you safe yourself the walk down the cliff.
Might have to get an old stroller for my gear if I start doing the walk down the cliff.
Pleased to hear you got out. It's always hard to pick the right gear if you sail out from brownwater. You need something floaty to get out there and home again but on the point you may need something smaller because it's so exposed.
