You could try, Others have and failed. If you walk out far enough to clear the shallows you might get away with it. It just depends on how much weed is floating about at the time. I sailed last year with a thruster but still caught a lot of weed and in close could not sail at all, You really would not want to catch a weed patch with a big freeride fin.....But your biggest problem will be hitting the bottom
...It's shallow through most of the run.
I used to live at Primbee and sailed there in westerlies. I didn't know about weed fins back then around 17 years ago.
Anyway it is possible as I did it. However I remember having to stop frequently to get the weed off. I also perfected a method of sailing upwind into a tack and then sailing backwards for a few meters to remove the weed off the fin.
So it can be done but its not that good.
Does anyone know if there'll be a spare powerbox weed fin for a 92 - 110l for loan for the day? It would be much appreciated ![]()
As Jase said depends on the weed sitrep at the time and where you want to sail, you can sail out in the middle of the lake without issue but it's deep and choppy, not like the butter smooth on the inside :)
I've done it before a few times but I was running a 15cm freestyle fin and even then it's pretty annoying, sometimes it's not even possible. I'd say if you are driving any considerable distance give it a miss, unless, you don't mind sailing out in the middle.
Big day at the lake, a couple of 40s. Record crowd. Rob smashed his pb by about 7 knots! 40.25 on a Mistral Energiser. In the deep water! ( Well, a bit over 500mm deep).
