No.. its not a council proposal, but just for a minute think about it. Would you be prepared to pay, say $10, a day (say weekends only), for the privalage of parking and sailing at Kyeemagh ?- no different to parking at 'The Pond' or the beaches on the north side!
Yesterday was complete mayhem. Parking was a premium even though the bathes are closed. The BBQing/picnic crowd had completely over taken the area, and while its in their total right to use this area too, they did leave the park looking worse than a aftermath of a 3 day outdoor rock concert. I don't think Ive ever seen this area so crowded and abused!
Anyhow I was wondering how many people would still show up ther if they had to pay for parking. My experience in (my) council parks on the parra river foreshore, where meters have been installed, is that this quickly reduces the patronage to almost Zero!
Like I said, others have a right to use this area too, but a small fee for paking on weekends/public holidays would thin the crowd or at least reduce the number of surplus cars that access the area and at least pay for the clean up of the park after all have left - the mess was disgusting!
I know as sailors, we probably hogg the parking spots as much as or even more so than others (usually one car per sailor) - So I'd be prepared to pay - just to have some sort of order!
Its not a proposal - just a thought.
Be careful. If what you ask for is examined, the local residents may come up with a resident only local parking area, similar to areas in the Willoughby council area. Paid parking is an idea but would it fix the problem? Some people wouldn't worry about paying for a ticket and people in the local municipality would probably get a sticker to park there for free anyway. In the long term most people would just accept the price and pay it. People are willing to pay to drive on toll roads so they would probably pay for parking too.
Not sure what the best answer is. Perhaps making the M-5 a one way road going west on Sunday? I was told Saturday is not as busy.
I was down there yesterday but didn't go sailing. Too hard to get a park close to the foreshore. Great to see the families enjoying time by the beach. Their barbeques smelled good. Loved the speed boat with the loudspeakers playing Arabic rap you could hear from 200 meters away.
Edit: If people are leaving rubbish behind perhaps the council should be encouraged to get rubbish inspectors out and start handing out a few fines. Keep Australia Beautiful.
For us to hold a windsurfing event we need 3 levels of permits ($$), and have no special rights, and a ton of rules to abide by, which is all fine.
If you want to invite your extended family to the beach, have open BBQs on the ground, with 5 jet skis, leave the place a tip and intimidate the rest of the public, it cost nothing....
I'm not bitter, just disappointed sometimes...
I've pretty much given up on the place. Any hot day is packed there. The drive to Wanda is not much better so I might just stick with light winds at Long Reef!
I totally agree Crash. I'm over it too. I think I'll be spending this season more down at Narrabeen Lake teaching my young bloke to sail. Sure the runs are shorter but bottom line is I am still out sailing without the hassle of jet skis etc.
Sure, the Jetskis chop up the water, but they're usually doing Mach-1 within 30m of the beach. Further out they're not too bad, just the occasional near-miss.
Parking sux though. ![]()
Yeah, despite the negatives about lake sailing, the onshore aspect of Narrabeen Lake is hard to beat in Sydney. Easy and free parking at the western end, plenty of rigging space, lots of shade, taps with water and a relaxed atmosphere. Its really peaceful in the parkland at the western end of the lake and is just a good place to take it easy.
What really peeves me off is the number of people that just leave their rubbish behind, particularly used nappies. I've made some comments to a few but they don't give a damn. Just recently I approach the culprits and start picking up their rubbish and they look at me like I'm crazy.
I'm thinking of contacting Rockdale council to see if they'll put some signs up, in several languages, warning people about leaving their rubbish and potential fines. They're pretty quick with the signs about not rigging on footpaths or washing gear and dogs on beaches etc.
Yep, parking is a nighmare there. If your getting fed up with that area try Rozelle, sure the runs a short but its a great little spot. Excellent parking, BBQ's large grass area for rigging etc.
Wasn't meant to be a debate on which Sydney spot is better - I've sailed the Pond and Rozelle quite a lot and I know which I prefer, as everyone has their favourite spot for whatever reason.
Its just that the authorities have let the place get out of hand and are very passive about restoring some sort of order.
The meters was just an idea, after seeing positive results in my municipality which was suffering the same sort of kaos. It wouldn't solve the boating/jet skiing bedlam, but as 'Sheartip' said they usually stick within 30m of the shoreline (pose factor) seldom come across one after that.
I share your pain Davman...but haven't been there on a crowded (ie non-windsurfers type crowd) for a while.
I'm just soooo tired from Sat & Sun up at Winda Woppa (on nth side Pt Stephens), all that sun, long clear runs, powered up on a 7.0m.
And...only 2 hours from Hornsby.
But I'll take Botany any day for a quick blast - it is a great windsurfingspot that accomodates most wind directions, partic in summer.
I am totally over Narrabeen, flukey wind, sh^tty water, shallow, short runs.
Kyeemagh was built out up to virtually the shoreline many years ago, so we just gotta live with it & all the other users
Great pic Wineman - looks like you almost sailed accross to the other side - good to hear you had a great time - Winda is such a nice spot to sail.
Sunday arvo was good 7.5 sailing here too, but nowhere near as nice as Winda.
good shot indeed mate, where exactly is it? I did some of my first proper windsurfing off Shoal Bay last Xmas, is that the same area? I sailed across to hawks nest and back one day.
Yeah, Port Stephens is a great place.
Looking at heading up there for the weekend soon. Probably stay at the Jimmy's Beach caravan park. Fishing, boating and some windsurfing depending on the wind.
Sorry to change the thread a little, is there anywhere on the central coast (NSW) that is good for our lot?
The in laws live up there and i could kill 2 birds with one trip on a very regular basis. ![]()
Have not read this forum for a while so excuse the late addition.
About 5 years ago when Rockdale Council removed much of the parking from Kyeemah due to hoons,Fast Phil and I wrote them plenty of letters expressing our concerns.
They always replied and are aware that windsurfers enjoy using this spot.
Page 36 of the Sun Herald this mornng - Rockdale Council really does have it in for us, the b@#stards.
I dont have a scanner at home but will scan in the morning and post it.
I massive car park right where we rig on the grass.![]()

Thats down near President Ave. the otherside of the Novatel - they're still b@#stards though

Maybe our jetskiing-bong smoking-Haibatchi cooking freinds[}:)], will move down to the new carpark? - doubt it though.
Harrow got it right on another thread - Shiity overcast rainy weather on the weekend - nice sunnny weekday arvos - seems to manage the crowd nicely.![]()
U never know tho, it may help us if their is a bigger carpark closer to the main drag, people may go there instead leaving us with the north end. Providing they dont fill it of course. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Based on this report there will be more parking so that should be alright shouldn't it?
