In light of the Insurance thread in the Windsurfing/General forum I've decided to find some "Windsurfing Insurance" for leisure sailing on NSW waters.

I've rung 4 of the major insurers with no luck.

Can anyone suggest an insurer?

What kind of insurance are you looking for?
- injury insurance? Short term disability?
- gear insurance?
- third party insurance if someone on the beach trips over your rig and hurts themselves?

I was specifically talking about 3rd party injury insurance (should have mentioned that).

I don't care about my gear or 'their' gear as I can meet that cost.

Just got off the phone from a Marine Insurance broker and he said that most Home Contents policies have a Personal Liability component that would PROBABLY cover me.

Just about to read the PDS and send off an email to get something in writing.

Unattended gear is an interesting situation, got any thoughts on that?

Have a look at the AWA website:

windsurfing.org/insurance.htm

This is the insurance you get when joining an AWA affiliated club.

- Illawarra Yacht Club Ltd (NSW)
- Marmong Point Sailing Club Inc (NSW)
- Merimbula Sailboard Club (NSW)
- Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff Sailing Club (NSW)
- NSW Wavesailing Association Inc (NSW)
- St George Sailing Club Ltd (NSW)
- Stormriders Windsurfing Club Inc (NSW)
- Windsurfer Class Assoc. of Australia (NSW)

The webpage says that Ian Fox is the expert, so you could email him via the link on the right side of the page if you need more information.

The AWA insurance used to only cover you (third party injury) when sailing in an club organised event - so usually a competition but not just general casual sailing 99.9% of the time by 99.9% of people.

I understood the equivalent Kiter's association insurance covered members when kiting at anytime, it doesn't have to be an organised event by an affiliated club.

I read on Seabreeze somewhere a while ago AWA (via Ian Fox) were looking at insurance providers to see if the AWA insurance could cover members when sailing even in non club organised events. I would figure if Kiters can get it why not windsurfers ?

I also figure this would be a great selling point for the average windsurfer to join the AWA (via your local club) as you get 3rd party injury insurance for all sailing activities. At present the biggest attraction to the average windsurfer joining the AWA (via a club) is to compete in the club events, of which a large number of people either don't want to, or find it hard to make / find the time / travel to the location. Cheap 3rd party injury insurance for whenever you are sailing would surely be a big drawcard.

So does anyone know if the AWA insurance now covers members 24/7 or is it still just when participating in affiliated club organised and registered events ?

(I would like to point out that I do appreciate the work the volunteers of the AWA and all the affiliated clubs put in to running, organising, promoting windsurfing and I would suggest everyone reading this should go join, the bigger the membership the better the service and the bigger the voice, cheap insurance or not).

You'll need to double check with Ian Fox, but my understanding is that the new 3rd Party insurance policy with the AWA(this year) is a 24hr coverage and therefore covers sailors both at club events and outside competitions.(so whilst you're training for example)
Like I mentioned, check with Ian.

I am pretty sure a NSW Wavesailing association membership includes an annual 3rd party insurance comp or not. Just contact them for what the current status is:

The NSW WSA would be the AWA insurance, being an affiliated club.

I guess it is all in the wording of the policy and the lawyers involved.

This policy statement :

Individual members are covered for public liability claims (including member to member cover) arising from any windsurfing activities 24 hours a day except where participating in any organized event not sanctioned by the insured.

Makes it sound like TPL whenever (unless competing in say the Ledge to Lancelin), but then it also says :

Windsurfing including all administration, association sanctioned events, training and practice sessions under the auspices of the Insured.

So in my cynical understanding of insurance companies I take this to mean that the training or practice session (or 24 hour sail) must be under the auspices of a AWA insured club. For example :

2 day weekend NSW WSA event.
Day 1 no wind, comp layday called, you go for a free sail, but you are covered as this is a free sail under the auspice of NSW WSA
Day 2 wind, comp is on, you sail and you are covered.
Day 3, you stay on and have a free sail, everyone else goes home, comp weekend is over, next event is in 4 weeks time and so you are not now covered as today has no registered or nominated event associated with it, not even a training, practice or layday.

I guess the NSW WSA could nominate everyday of the year as a 'training' session and register it, but the insurance company might then get a bit peeved off.

Maybe the GPS TC could join the AWA, so all GSP TC teams and team members become AWA insured and then any day you sail and another member of your team also sails so counts for GPS TC is technically a GPS TC sanctioned event and so you would be covered ?

I think you will find that AWA has negotiated 24/7 coverage for us through your affiliated club of choice. If you look at this link and scroll down to the 3rd topic it says for 24/7 coverage but the AWA site has yet to be updated. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a big deal for everyone to join your local club.

One easy way is via the NSWWA where you can register online at nswwavesailing.org/membership/

- I believe other clubs/ass'ns may also have this'
