Getting Started in Newcastle

G'day,
I'm a uni student (studying in Newcastle), and I've been keen to get into windsurfing for a while but I have no idea where to really begin. I've done a lesson or so a while back, and I've done heaps of sailing in my time so I understand (some) of the concepts. Now I could buy a board and go from there, but I think I've still got a fair bit to learn before I go into finding a board and sticking with it for a while (also getting a board around isn't the easiest for me).
I know there's a good bit of windsurfing down at Lake Maq, and I'm definitely keen to get down there when I can but its a bit of a hike for sure.

Does anyone have any suggestions to how I could get into windsurfing and have a real go?

Marmong is a good spot to learn, easy access to the water and fairly shallow for the first 50m.
