Well, maybe not quite. That southerly this afternoon was more a puff. Made the decision not to chase it up at Windang which turned out to be a wise one. The wind would have been done by the time made it there.
Did anyone get out in the Gong?
On that note though it looks like this front will bring us a little bit of Southerly swell tomorrow. Models show there might also be a Nor'Easter. Personally I think this combo will only happen if it clears up. Either way, I'll put up a post plus photos first thing in case anyone wants to drive down for the day.
Talk about a fizzer, I was all geared up for a big one, was apparently about 25kts for 10 minutes.....Gong failed.
As I type this though, in typical fashion it's a solid 20kts outside right now....ahhhh. I might just have to fit those Ayup lights off my MTB onto the windsurfer ^_^
Same story in Sydney. I got to Sandringham at midday and cruised around for a bit while the wind got lighter and lighter. I finally came to a standstill at about 5pm - then the front hit and suddenly I was horribly overpowered on my 6.2. But by the time I'd made it back to shore and changed down, it was all over - bugger!
Monitor the wind reports from the other south coat locations on the BOM site it has saved me a lot of time.
Montague Island,Ulladulla, etc can give a good idea of the strength of the southerly front. Not fool proof but helpful.
Yes BOM can be used as an indicator but as Stehs says the variation in wind strengths up and down the coast can be massive. Sometimes it can be 30kts here in the Gong and only 15kts further south, other times the reverse (although this is rare). I'd have to say the most reliable place in my opinion is Botany Bay, it's usually as strong as down here and often stronger/more consistent.
