Im going to try wave sailing for the first time this weekend, i have been told about gerroa, does it work in a N NW?
You'll find it will be very offshore and therefore not sailable. There are other possible NW spots in Sydney or the Gong. for Sydney - you could try around Collaroy as a NW will be side to side-off but lots of buildings in the way.
Tim's right, however gerroa is quite an exceptional place in that it can drag a northerly wind around into a NE'r simply due to the areas geographical nature, it's more unlikey that will happen at this time of year however as the land isn't really hot enough. So many times it's been blowing 10kts N-NW here in wollongong and i'll drive down to gerroa....head around the kiama bends and all you can see is white caps.
What i'm saying in a long winded way is I would not be surprised if it blows NE down at gerroa this saturday or sunday, but don't make a big trip on my predictions. Check the shoalhaven surf cam and all the local observations before you make a move.
I'm at gerroa now. We drove down yesterday. Left Sydney at lunchtime, it wAs 2kt westerly on botany bay, 5 kt easterly at Wollongong, and 20-25kt nor east at gerroa. Gotta love this joint. That has happened so many times over the years it's ridiculous.
We even had an overhead south swell, lovin it!
The downside of having it's own little climate bubble at gerroa is what's happening now. It's ne all down the coast, ne of the headland, and sw on the beach. Go figure. Thank god we put in the paddleboards, the guarantee of getting in the water and having fun no matter what the wind and surf are doing. ![]()
Was fun sailing out from Corrimal in a NE then having it swing NW (dead offshore) as soon as I gybed. Dog-paddling my gear in looked so hardcore.
Should have called it a day the run before.
Gerroa did the exact same thing both sat and Sunday. Spun 360dgs all morning on the beach while it was ne the whole time off the point. Then at luch time went ne and picked from glass to 25kts in 15minutes, blew 25kts for 45minutes then went back to glass. Baffling to watch.
A couple of us went down to Gerroa on sunday, first run was fantastic but after that the wind died but i still managed to sail a couple of small waves on the way in ( first time ) wind changed direction 3 times in as many hours. We didnt get a NE but i had a great time. Were trying to find a place to stay for the next long weekend so we can have another go.
Try Dick Payne Real Estate - they have a few reasonably priced houses on their books about $400 for a weekend
Heading off to Gerroa again this weekend, managed to find a house for the duration. Anyone heading down there??
