G'day everyone.

I'm interested in hearing from people who have sailed a formula board on St George's basin down on the south coast.

Where did you launch?
Were there any hazards or areas to avoid? I know the north of the boat ramp has a shallow weedy area but the rest is ok?

Trying to see if it can be a valid alternative for racing when the shore break at huskisson is nasty and wants to eat our expensive race sails!

I sailed there a few times years ago, and found it was pretty shallow in some places. I ended up cutting down a fin to 60cm to make it more forgiving. Not enough sailing time to know which areas are good or bad, sorry.

This was at the boat ramp (Palm Beach?), near the Greville (?) corner shop.

Out past the channel marker it is significantly deeper, but if I were sailing around there regularly I would be looking for a weed fin, just so that it doesn't hurt as much when you hit the shallow bits!

Since then I have bought a huge weedy but I haven't tried it.

I've seen formula boards and JP super lights get around no problem...well almost. There are a few shallow spots but once you get out and if the weeds not bad it'll be ok. If you stay east of the shallow marker your in the deep stuff, There's always JB which is a great spot for formula.

I sail formula there a few times a year. It's a great spot for sailing, particularly in the eastern section in a building nor easter. I launch from paradise beach, which is very shallow and a 100metre walk out to deep water. No need for a weed fin...

Thanks for the responses guys. Had a chat with a few guys at AGM last night and might look for another location on Jervis Bay rather than moving to Sanctuary Point.
