Andrew McLachlan, Commodore at Georges River Sailing Club, has generously offered to run a "Formula Boards Start" at the upcoming Sail Sydney Regatta in two week ends time - 19th & 20th of December. Racing will be on the beautiful Sydney Harbour together with the RS-X guys. Formula will have it's own start and a course will be set just north of Shark Island.
We'll be launching from the Woollahra Sailing Club. www.woollahrasailingclub.org.au/
Sebastian Kornum(DEN-24), Christian Justesen(DEN-26) & Brett Morris(AUS-8) have all entered the event and together with the RS-X fleet, a quality field like this should provide the perfect platform to show case the joys of windsurfing course racing on Sydney Harbour. As it's the first time Formula boards have been invited onto the Yachting Australia stage, this is also a unique opportunity to present the class to a broader sailing audience & one not to be missed.
YA Club affiliated members are eligible to enter, however if you're not a member of a YA affiliated club, you can pay a special one off membership fee of $50 to GRSC via the Storm-riders Windsurfing Club for the YA insurance.
EFT $50 to Storm-riders Windsurfing Club BSB 112-879 Acc 154 132 815.
The regatta entry fee is $140 for the two day event with all the regatta details on the Sail Sydney web site.
Entry now open to Formula Boards, so head to the 'Competitors' menu link and then click 'Enter Online' and use the third option, 'I am registering for the first time and do not have a YA Number'. Then follow the prompts to register.

This event will also substitute for the Storm-riders Summer Series Heat #3 scheduled for the same wk end at GRSC. www.stormriderswindsurfingclub.com//formula-series--club-results.html
Look forward to seeing as many Formula boards out there on the harbour in two week ends time.

Adam,
I know the answer already but Tibor doesn't & won't believe me of course. Is Marmong an affiliated with YA club? Do we have to pay an extra $50? He is so cheap that Tibor.
Hi Bruce, yes unfortunately you do have to pay the extra $50. I'm pretty certain Marmong isn't an affiliated YA club. I spoke with James about this very issue just recently. I'd never say that myself about Tibor though. In fact I'd describe him as more of a silver tail!
Just entered....With NE winds all weekend coming straight down the harbour, it was too much to resist.
Not often we are allowed to sail on Sydney harbour, so looking forward to all the cool photos especially as I know there is a dedicated Formula photographer.
Cheers
Wind is looking absolutely perfect for racing on the harbour.
This is a unique opportunity to be invited to race in the Sydney International Regatta, so don't be shy...
Register asap.
The photos alone should be worth the effort...
Hopefully see you there...
Today was fun... Hundreds of boats all over the harbour... Good fleet of RSX people out training also. Windy with same for tomorrow and Sunday... Loads of parking as they use the park next door also... Looking forward to the racing....
i reckon at the briefing there will be about 10 minutes on ferries!! breifing is at 9:30am and then nothing for 1.5 hrs or breifing will go for ever
Really stressful day for me on the water today. just so choppy and gusty and so much traffic including seaplane propeller prop coming at me
in the morning the wind was light so we waited a while for the wind to kick in. When we hit the water the wind was still a bit light so I went with the 12m. My biggest sail. We sailed out to our course area west of Shark Island where the wind was nice and consistent but super choppy from all the powerboats. Maratine shut us down as we where too close to the shipping lanes. We relocated to Rose Bay where the wind was lighter and gusty. Everyone was on 11m so I was thinking I may have a advantage but the thing is I really needed a smaller lighter more reactive sail to throw around more on the short course. (we did three laps).
First Race
Sebastian Kornum was super!! He has just come from Maui where he said he has never sailed so much!! and he was 3rd at the last Formula world championship! Super talent. He won the race :-)
Christian and I came in second equal. I was surprised I thought he was gone but I got a killer gust down the last run so I had some luck. Dave was next.
In the second race I retired to save myself for tomorrow :-(. The wind was pumping and I spent ages trying to get the 12m out of the water before the start of heat 2.
Sebastian won again and Brett was second and then Christian, only three finisher in this one.
Tomorrow will be very windy. I have taken the 12m out of the car. :-) no chance of making that mistake again.
here are my tracks
Also the RSX guys and girls sailed great. Super fleet and great fitness.
They did 4 races in difficult conditions. Class rules say maximum 3 races or 2 races in pumping conditions.
The race I sailed I noticed Jo Sterling from Royal Queensland was awesome!! I hope YA send a Aussie girl to the Olympic games, Jo has already qualified the nation for Rio so she is at Olympic Standard
A Large Korean team was there and they looked good.
Jock Calvert from Tasmania was flying on the 8.5m when the wind came up. As a youth he is restricted to the 8.5m but does have the strength and skill for the full rig.
The RSX fleet looked very skilled
Crazy couple of days racing in Sydney Harbour. We were mostly in Rose Bay as the harbour proper was busy and super windy.
Great to be involved with the RSX men and women, who worked hard all weekend to get the maximum 8 races completed.
Great to see OZ with so many talented racers. Hopefully the YA will spend some of the allocated funds to actually send reps to Rio...
The Formula was dominated by the world #3 (Sebastian Kornum DEN-24), winning every race. That said it was great racing and pretty cool to be involved in such a large regatta, especially all the youth.....
Thanks to Woollahra YC and the RO's and volunteers that kicked in to make the event happen....
Crazy conditions at the SIRS regatta only 4 guys came back for more torture after Saturday. There was me and Brett and the two young legend Danish guys.
Now I know the object of the racing game is to win, but sometimes you have to be realistic. These three other guys are arguably or probably the best guys in Australia at Formula at the moment. I had wishful thinking of finishing on the podium with two of these guys, that was my goal! 10 or 15 years ago I did actually finish 3rd at SIRS in the Olympic class but due to a error I wasn't awarded my prize.
So I was out to miraculously somehow set it right and relive my moment at age 44, LOL.
Here is my recount of how it went down for me.
The conditions were forecasted to get to 30knots!! A absolute black nor easter!!! Sebastian and I looked at each other before we went out and yes we were both freaking out a little bit. Sebastian had only a 11m to use where as I had full storm gear.
I should say Sebastian and Christian got to bed 5 or 6 hours after me the night before due to a full on party right up the far end of the Northern Beaches!! I think this is good for my chances.
Anyway the first race starts and finishes and I manage to come last.
Surprisingly the wind has back right off. Before the next race I shift the mast base back and change the HLines and a few other things trying to power it up.
I do the sums and for me to get third I believe I have to get 2nd and Brett has to come 4th. Its highly improbably I think to myself but you have to try.
The last race starts.
At the first downwind gate Brett is 2nd and Im 3rd and Christian is 4th. Brett goes through the gate and rounds out heading out to the favoured side of the course. I have no option but to gybe through the gate and go out on starboard tack which I think looks pretty good anyway. No point in following. Christian goes with me!! WOW! So now Im thinking if the left side works out and if I stay in front of Christian and will have done it and got third overall! And that is what I did!!! I had to sail super hard on the last very fast downwind to stay in front of Christian. Going across the line I thought of that Maxwell Smart Best day of my life scene. Check it out.
Well done Justin Lord, great write up. Was like I was almost there!
Sorry to have missed it but a big congrates to all the competitors especially the podium placers.
