Two of us got out at Nobbys (Newcastle) today. I think it's easily the earliest in
a season I've sailed a NE. Only just strong enough to putt out but the
waves were perfect for it. We missed the peak of the wind, which was a
knot or two stronger.
I even sailed without any kind of wetsuit and wasn't cold.
Anyone else have a go?
12-14 knots was not enough to call a season starter at wanda - if the weekends swell was still around I would have rigged up
It was close to 20 knots yesterday arvo at about 5pm when I got home. Would have been strong enough to sail for sure. No waves but or time.
hey mate yeah i seen yous out there not much wind though hey. nobbys a good spot for beginners in newcastle or is there somewhere easier? hopefully get out in the waves over summer if i improve enough. what sort of boards were yous on? i noticed yous could uphaul relatively easy.
steve.
Steve, Nobbys is the best place for beginners in NEs around here. You might have noticed we were able to get out despite the lack of wind because it's a reef break with deeper water next to the break, though when the surf gets bigger it'll break there too, though less.
Yeah we needed to be able to uphaul, though we probably could have juggled a waterstart at times.
I at 73 kg used a 91L board with a 5.6m. I would have used my 75L no worries but Lyndon lent me his "small" board which made it easier to get onto the waves. He at 84kg used 113L waveboard with a 6.2m.
ahh ok cool. thanks for the info. does it blow NE here a lot over summer usually? maybe a bit there this afternoon and tomoz arvo by the look of graph.
Newcastle gets good summer NEs, probably similar to the rest of the coast. Not sure how true this is, but I feel it blows later in the day here, i.e. doesn't die as early, which is good for sailing after work.
Today was a dud, but if it blows tomorrow at least two of us will be out that I know. But swell angle won't be as good as last Thursday.
