I don't want to jinx this but feel quietly confident.

So you really think that our hubbly bubbly smoking friends are going to cancel their day at the bay?

well, after 2 weeks of very little wind at hawks nest, i got back yesterday & headed down to botany for some reliable nor-easter albeit a bit later in the afternoon.
But, upon turning into bestic street.....WTF !!!!!!!
absolute carnage. - 40 mins of trying for a park.
There appears to be a system running among our "hubbly bubbly smoking friends" whereupon when they are leaving, they will not drive their cars away from a park until one of the cousins has turned up in a re-birthed beema to take it.
it was killing me watching it going off on the water, but not able to do anything about it.
disaster !!!!

Its a bit lumpier sometimes, but Kurnell is good in a NE too, and there is normally a lot more space to park. I went out there yesterday for a look and there were two boards and about 4 kites out, and it looked like there had been a few more kiters out earlier.

It was certainly windy out there, and if it takes you 40 minutes to search for a spot, it would be a better bet.

Why did you not go to the new carpark just after crossing the bridge? There is a lot more parking up there and a huge amount of grass to rig on. The downer is the long path to and from the beach, no shade plus the water taps are up near the road.

I've only heard of the new carpark being filled once but have not seen it myself.

As moby said, use the other carpark. i dont bother with Bestic st anymore. In the other spot I can back the van right up to the grass and its quite a pleasant spot.

Time for a Reality Check

In all fairness, as far as parking spots, you'd probably do the same for one of your sailing buddies - I know I would.

At one stage I counted 30 sailors on the water. If you add the ones sitting on the beach, rigging up or derigging or just chatting and you allow 1 car (ful of gear) per sailor, parking was always going to be a premium on this hot breezy Sunday -"hubbly bubbly smoking friends" aside.

We all would love to just pull up to the beach (me included) rig up and sail away - its Sydney and its not going to happen.
Try Balmoral (where you pay) a bit later in the afternoon on a hot Sunday next time (good luck)

As Moby and FormulaN pointed out, there are other options.

Unfortunately we have to grin and bear it

Dave is right. We are generally only 1 person per vehicle (again 'cos our cars are full of gear ),
which means we are taking up more parking space per person etc.

As said, the northernmost carpark right next to Cooks R bridge (from the south do loop under bridge) is by far the best option.
Still trying to get Rocky Ccl to put caps on steel posts (we don't want any kiddies to cut themselves , do we).

Spoke to a visiting Russian couple sailing there on Sunday - they thought it was a magic spot.

FYI, the new car park was full yesterday, which wasn't the case on previous windy days.
And there was more people than usual on the water.

I was sailing with a few guys from the beach right along the start of the runway, they launched from the car park there. This is the carpark on the other side of the river inlet, it's another option on a busy day.

Another option is to keep heading down to Ramsgate. The only time I've seen the carpark full is when there was a Fast 4's, Rotaries and Sub Woofer convention.

It can be in a bit of a wind hole & bumpy, but there are magic runs straight across to Kurnell

Haha! well put!

The car park north of bestic street was full by 2pm. 25+ knots of wind cleared it out pretty quickly as the day went on.

When that car park gets full, people park on the adjacent grass area, it's huge. The grass area did serve well as a parking spot for many. There were authorities around but didn't see any one with a parking fine.

Why don't other users of the public space have the same rights to parking that we do? No agro intended here but I don't think comments like these do anything for us or anyone ese.

I was there on Sunday and yes, it was really busy but there were as many cars with windsurfers on the roof cruising round looking for a spot as there were any others. Also, I was parked in a not-so-legal spot while I unloaded but then saw a family of these 'hubbly bubblies' as you put it, asked them if they were leaving and they were really nice, telling me that yes, they were leaving in a few mins and then giving me a hollar when they were so I could grab my car. Couldn't have been nicer.

Ramsgate has filled up last Sunday and the Sunday before after 2.00pm/3.00pm :(
It became really crowded.
We have had a family next to us where the dad of the family has tried to put a guy rope of his sunshade across my legs and he's looked at my sail as if wanted to punch the peg though it...

I think that we should count our blessings and be glad that the multi million dollar desal plant has made a great contribution to windsurfing.

Everytime I've been down to the new parking area I've managed to get a spot and there's acres of grass area for rigging.

The only thing missing is a trees! They could have planted some mature trees rather than the puny little sapplings.

All we need to do is bring down some cut up coke bottles and tape to cover those nasty metal spikes!

BTW the latest forecast is for NE up to 30 knots! my BBQ is cancelled...and I have a new board to test out!

Yeah the new carpark is great with only a few small issues that have to be lived with for now but will hopefully be fixed over time. At least with a van you can open up the tailgate and have some shade with a beaut view over the bay.

There were good conditions for a barbeque and to teach windsurfing at Narrabeen Lake in the late afternoon. Actually the weather was perfect.
