Superb arvo out there with what certainly feels like a nor-east sea breeze making its presence felt!!!
Lets all hope this a forerunner of a good season ahead.

Yes it sure was a light NE'er - tempting but not enough to get out there

The Seabreeze graphs for Syd Harbour and Kurnell for today show an amazingly steady breeze.
Would have been perfection on a longboard!

2 days of 15-20kts in the Illawarra.
The new weather station works a treat.

And you caught both of them! The season has kicked off, good to be on the water, 7.5 at Sandon Pt. Where's that new weather station?

Hi Ian, On the green pole at Primbee. Have a look on the Illawarra Speedsters facebook page or Illawarra Windsurfing facebook page for all the details.

Thanks Glen. With Spring about to spring there'll be no excuse not to go and have a look. Probably the best anemometer siting on the coast. What height is it above water and what's the fetch in each direction?

Ian, the anemometer is about 5 metres above water level, depending upon tide. The fetch in a westerly must be a couple of km? In a NE maybe 800m? We tried to position the anemometer clear of any obstruction on the pole but I guess there is always some turbulance.

Sounds like it passes the siting guidelines. Not many anemometers do.

www.bom.gov.au/climate/cdo/about/observation_specification_2013.pdf

At 5 metres height you ideally need to be 30 X 5metres = 150 metres from obstacles 5 metres high. 800 metres is plenty, should be OK even if obstacles are quite a bit taller. It's not the turbulence, that's always there, the wind profile is distorted by obstacles and needs distance to settle down. It's sited better than the Bellambi anemometer, though the Bellambi one is at the standard height of 10 metres. All anemometers put their own unique spin on the wind. After a while we've even sort of calibrated the Gerroa anemometer. Don't you double it in a noreaster and halve it in a westerly?
