Burrum Windfest 2016 - '10th Birthday Celebration'

prelim dates. Mon 7th March 2016 - Sat 12th March 2016.

Speed HQ is possibly moving to 'The Grand', which is situated on the esplanade further towards the boat ramp.

It is our intention for this coming event to push the hell out of it and encourage everyone to come. Help make our 10th birthday a big one. forget dwelling on the wind! come and make a holiday of it.

If you have thought over the past few years you'd like to come but haven't pushed the button then 2016 IS the year to do it!

the format is simple. longboard racing in the morning, speed/slalom racing in the afternoon and parties at night. we have boats on the water and a general area to sail depending on daily wind direction. it's mate against mate on the same stretch of water. turn up, strap on a gps and blast or battle it out on the race course against Australia best or do both!

I'd love to come to Burrum in 2016. Generally I don't like school holidays, but it's a shame they don't coincide so I could convince the missus and kid to come for a windsurfing holiday.

yeah it is the same for myself. there's nothing we can do unfortunately because of a coupe of reasons.

first one is that we pick the dates based on the best low tide in march. best low tides give us the biggest window and best conditions for speed sailing.
second reason is that during the easter long weekend burrum heads hosts a fishing contest where around 10,000 people arrive in the area and more specifically the burrum river where we speed sail.

we do try to have weekend somewhere during the event to allow more people to come. usually I try and get my family to come over the weekend and make a long weekend of it.

What's it like for general freesailing?? I'd like to come for a bit of a gander but I'm not equipped for that speedsailing stuff.

Hi jh2703, Burrum is a great place for freesailing,it is just a great place to go sailing fall stop, I have sailed it now for more than 12 years, one of the best spots on the east coast.

yeah it's a great spot. it's the scale of the place that throws people at first. there is literally kilometres of area to sail in.

it is an excellent bump and jump spot at high tide. also has some mushy bay waves a bit further out during a good blow and then when the tide drops the banks appear and there are kilometres of flat water blasting spots.

it is also a very good spot to sup.

at the event we get a real mix of gear. speed stuff, slalom kit, formula setups, raceboards, one designs, bump and jump kit, pretty much anything goes.

I almost forgot.

it works in any wind direction. not many places can boast that. seriously impressive that no matter what the wind is doing you can make the most of it.

Also very happy announce to we have added SUP's to the program.

Hervey Bay Stand Up Paddle are working with us to include Paddle Boarding in the Windfest program. Graham will be conducting try paddle board sessions for the general public during the event. The finale for the SUP program is a formal race on the final day of Windfest.

Hey everyone,

This event is getting closer and it sounds like quite a few people are heading up from NSW.

To compete in the event, sailors need to be a member of a windsurfing club for insurance coverage. For anyone who is not yet a member, Marmong Point SC is offering a special price on social membership which runs through to 30th June for only $50. (normal social membership is $90/year). In addition to insurance, you can get a sail number and know that you are sowing into our sport. Clubs are the ones who put on events like formula, gps, slalom, beginners days, BBQs etc.

If you're interested in joining, send me a PM or chat to Byron or myself at the beach and we can grab your details.

Cheers
James

If people are thinking of going to Burrum you need to be a member of a club and as James states we are doing It as cheep as we possibly can to help people out.
$50 is cheep insurance especially compared to other sports. So come and be a member of Marmong and reap all the benefits that come with it.
