Please help! I'm a fairly inexperienced 100kg fatty, that last windsurfed about 7 years ago (and did well). I have spotted the following gear on Gumtree, and would like some advice if this may be suitable for me: 'a Neil Pryde 5.0m2 and an air 6.5 performance sail, 2 masts, all rigging gear, a harness, heaps of misc parts, and a 186 starboard formula board'. If this gear is not suitable, would someone advise me what I should be looking for?

Any advice/opinions would be much appreciated. Cheers all.

I think the older formulas were a bit more user friendly and you could use it to improve, and then as a light wind board. You need to check if the board is in fair condition, it might have been damaged and if it has absorbed water or delaminated or having soft spots it's not worthwhile. The rest of the gear who knows...you should check that the masts are the correct type for the sails etc. It really depends on how much you want to commit to the sport , and if you are prepared to spend some more to get the best out of the kit give it a go. Find where other windsurfers sail in your area and ask for some initial help... good luck !

Many thanks for your awesome advice. The gear appears to be in good condition (from the photos), so I may make an offer. Cheers.

A lot of the stuff on gumtree is overpriced and mast may not match the sails etc. As a general rule start with a bigger board and then downsize as you improve and get more specialized gear to suit the type of sailing you want to do - flat water/formula/waves...

Always good to talk to windsurfers in your local area for realistic advice or an organised sailing day. I think Marmong Sailing Club closet in your area
(Central Coast?)

There is a recent post about Sydney sailing lessons in this section.

Great advice, thank you. I am frequently in the Marmong Point area, so will pay 'em a visit. Cheers.

How about a 2015 Naish Kailua 180 - 278 cm, 180 litres? Brand new. Advertised on this site for $1,850.

G'day toasty. This Saturday we're running windsurfing and SUP lessons at Marmong as part of the Powerboat racing. Come down from 10am and have a go. See you there.
