Only been trying to beat my PB .so far only 33 knots ,but thats ok for 6 month trying ,and **** conditions .
coming over west this year to try again ,i have a delta weed fin .but do you think I should get a more slalom oriented
board to go faster ,currently riding a 105 tabou rocket at 63 wide ,i was thinking more down the lines of a patrik freerace .100 ,60 ,wide
would this improve my chances of getting a higher speed .
or should i change my 6,0 cheetah for a camed lion .is another option ..
thanks for any tips .in advance ...

I wouldn't be scared about going smaller with board volume choice! Have a look at 90 volume boards and make it a slalom! New slalom boards are easy to sail nowadays! This helped me improve my gps PB's. Happy sailing
standard response to this question:
- What is your weight ? ... us a board a bit less that your body-weight
- Go out in more wind
- More downhaul

Change the 6.0 Cheetah for a cambered Lion, they're much faster!!!
Seriously Tardy, am looking for a good used 6.0 Cheetah so if you do decide to go down that road then please email me!
Do think that getting a more slalom oriented board than the Rocket would be the go if wanting that higher top end. I ride a 95 Rocket with no-cam freeride sails, very similar to what you use, and whilst I'm pretty happy with the general cruising speed on (really) flat water or out in the ocean, these boards do appear somewhat limited in going really fast (and using no-cam freeride sails could limit your top speed as well). My previous freeride board, a Fanatic Hawk, definitely had a higher top speed but needed more rider input to get that extra speed, particularly in stronger winds over choppy water where the faster boards become more demanding.
A possible limiting factor if you've already got a powerbox fin collection for your Rocket would be finding a slalom board that takes pb fins as there are very few, if any, that do. If you want to stick with your current quiver of pb fins then a fast freeride or freerace board that uses pb like a Fanatic Hawk or older JP Supersport (latest ones use tuttle boxes) may be the other option.
If you are intending to sail at safety bay keep your 6.0 for the stronger days and get a camed 7.0 for the lighter days. Also get a tribal super weed. The weed speeds don't have enough rake, I and several others have re boxed them with more rake. The Rocket would be just as quick as the patrik f race though the patrik is a great board. 33 is a good speed at safety bay, if you want more head down to Mandurah when the sea breeze is realy strong, you will definitely beat your pb. I live in Rockingham but mainly sail Mandurah now due to the old joints. Keep the delta for Mandurah. Happy to show you the local spots down there when you're over

thanks swindy .
you've put my mind at ez .knowing i have a board that will do better .i think it will too.
i was thinking today you are only on the last foot of the board .the rocket has good water release .
I will look at a 7,0 .cam sails .i have a good 90% pryde mast .i use on a x15 ..time it goes ..not a fast sail .
so it could be my sails ?? i remember when i done 33 knot on the cheetah i was looking for more power .
i actually done this speed in shark bay .waters .on a maui 32 weedy .
And yes love to sail mandurah..give you a call....later in the year .might give safety a miss and drive the extra kms ..
go sail with the mob.![]()

And the mob will love to sail with you.
Thanks decrepit ...coming in prime time next year ,mid January,
i was going to call down last year (november) but had 2 off wind days ![]()
lets see where the fastest sailers in Australia sail .![]()
doing the week at Shark B first ,so i should be a fined tune athlete by then ...well a older version ,![]()

Yep make sure you get in touch before coming down - we have a special gate to keep the Pinnaroos out. The lock is not complicated but it seems to work pretty well. It's just a couple of signs that say 'Push' and ' Pull', but we put 'em on the wrong way around and Bingo! No more Pesky Pinnas gettin' through.![]()

- mast track back, boom up - get the board flying off the tail, Tweak until you find the sweet spot
- bear away, deep....
- sail Liptons and Fangy's - you'll crack 35+ easily in a good summer sea breeze
so it could be my sails ?? i remember when i done 33 knot on the cheetah i was looking for more power .
Tardy, i know you dig the Ezzys. Im into them as well. Powerful easy sails. Recently i grabbed a GA Cosmic. Reads up the same as a Lion. Sails much differently. Maybe not quite as much grunt down low. But definately more top end. Ive easily picked up a few knots. Currently its my goto sail.
(not just coz its limegreen)The Ezzys have been shelved while i suss the GA Cosmic further. It just feels more performance orientated.![]()
Darkman
what ..leave ezzy ? that would be like going to kiting ..ha ![]()
good they're working out for ya Darkman ...
i did have a GA and must admit it was pretty fast ,just couldn't rig it for power .seemed to flat .
but great when the wind was up ..
i have to find a key for the gate (beer) to sail mandarah now ..
but i'm guarantied a 35 knot run ....
thanks stretchy .

Come on down to Albany Tardy when the summer Easterlies are crankin', good chance of a PB on the local speed strip!!!

"When" is the problem! I've only had one trip this year.
with boards ..mine is 63 wide ,are wider board faster ?..just looking at the 100 wide rocket ,they claim is more of a racer ,
but then i look at speed gps boards and they are narrow like darts ...the board i have 105 rocket has great control in all condition
and i have not trouble sheeting in hard ,in any conditions .my guess is narrow is better ?
I may stick with it .
I'M looking at cam sail now .for the extra top end .

Are you going deep enough to get the speeds. Follow a fast sailor and see how deep they go, be their shadow!.
Some guys are getting/have posted amazing speeds on big kit. 120-130l boards at 40knts, near perfect water conditions tho.

yeah thats my problem ..flat conditions limit me ...in you saying that about big kit ,i will look more at technique.and conditions ,
If I was limited to a small amount of gear I would choose a 6.3 and 7m with a board of around 100ltrs (65 wide) for Mandurah and I'm about 100kgs. Fins play a big part in summer too so I would go with a Fangy fin 24 or similar.
thanks Jon ,I have a delta 22 and a maui 31fins ,weeds ,105 &115 rocket ,5, 6 ,& 7,0.sails .hope this will do the trick .
might bring a 6,5 2 cam along too.
last year i found in the gusty days the 115 rocket came closer to my goal
as i was already doing a good speed when the big gust hit .
but the PB was on the 105 .![]()
this GPS sailing sure does get the heart pumping .![]()
it sure is a work in progress it doesn't happen over night ,like i thought it would .![]()
makes me push even harder ...I'm blow out how fast everybody is .
practise .
Tardy, the recipe for speed is:
- flat water
- strong wind
- the largest sail you can control - 3 to 4 cams help
- the correct amount of down haul, twist and batten tension in the sail
- adjustable out haul - pull on to go upwind, let out when bearing away - the sail should touch the boom all the way to the rear harness line
- adjust the position of mast base and boom height to fly the fin and just stay in control
- the higher the boom and further back the more you fly
- adjust one at a time, in small increments, until you are on the edge of control when powered up
- the smallest fin that gets you back upwind
- don't choke your sail with your back hand
- bear away in the gusts - 130 to 140 degrees - you need to be powered up or this feels really weird
- close the gap between bottom of the sail and the deck of the board and straighten your front leg and bend your rear leg when bearing away - this way you are in a locked in position when hit by a gust and you transfer all the force into forward motion - you need to be powered up or this feels really weird too
- big balls and tight sfincter
