Real keen on getting over to sandy point (from NZ) for a session and was wandering if I could get some advice on when I should go.
Tossing up between speed fortnight or watching wind guru and jumping on the plane as soon as it looks right.
Can anyone tell me how accurate is wind guru is at sandy point and maybe other pointers such as direction, tide etc.
Cheers Dave.
How long have you got? If you can come for a month around speed fortnight it would be hard to miss. Even in the two weeks we have always had some pretty good days, not always epic, but 40 knots + days anyhow. Most years we have had at least one day of classic SP speed conditions and usually quite a few other days of some sort of speed sailing fun. One year the really big wind day arrived the Monday after SpeedWeek finished so if you can be a bit flexible in your stay it could help a lot.
Windguru and Windfinder are really very good most of the time and get better as a weather event gets closer of course. A week out they provide something to keep an eye on. 3 days out it's usually worth booking the time off but some types of systems are more predictable than others. Intense lows that form in Bass Straight are very hard to predict. Big high pressure systems are a lot more reliable.
Definitely give me a PM if you want my opinion on any given weather situation. I can usually at least tell you if I think it is more likely to eventuate or not.
Dave,Windguru is pretty good for people who jump onto planes for the Pit dash (ask Slowly) You need it to be WSW to SW and a low tide for the best "Go Fast" conditions. If you have the time come over for the fortnight much more fun than watching computer screans. The Pit is also sailable on high tides and all wind directions except SE
G'day Dave
My name is Johnny Miller im from Sydney i went 2 sandy point for the first time last year i am pretty much a beginner i could plain with a top speed off 27kts and i could do gybes but non plaining i surf in lakes, ocean and big bodies of water thats sort of open usally pretty choppy over 15kts. I went 2 sandy point for the full 2 weeks and took the misses we stayed in a house with the VIC dudes and lined it all up with Matt Robinson or Sailquik or Kato both thoughs old dudes r umbelievably good surfers both go super quick 40+ and kato did a bull**** air but be carful around kato he may grab your boom a lack of etiquette on the water and off
the conditions i thought were good from my point of view i surfed most days (11 out 14 days) probably could have surfer all. The first day was like 40 to 70 kts (didn't surf that day) every second day was about 10 - 15 kts and every other day was about 15 - 25 kts. Compared 2 anything i ever surfed it was unbelievably flat i increased my top speed to 32kts it was definitely worth going sailing was real good heaps of good and helpful sailors around. We meet plenty of friendly people that we have kept in touch with and the negatives were it was cold there was plenty of stuff to do out of the water like Golf, bush walking, going to the rainforest's, or going to Melbourne. at night everyone came to the main house and all the data was put on the big screen prizes were given out it is what it is its no animal house at night just a few quite drinks, talking and outdated sci fi movies to please the VIC's
it was good man i throughly recommend it i may have 2 wait til next year, since sandy point i sailed troughtout summer in sydney my sailing went through the roof full plaining gybes and consistant 29-30kts i have to say alot of that came to sandy point alot of my buddy's havn't had the rapid improvement that ive had i refer to Spencer, Marni, Nick, Mike, Pete, Gertz, Martin, Larko. [}:)] also the had races at sandy point which were pretty fun. i got to try one of the most difficult board to ride there were complications i have also add this. Dave i hope u give it a go if your ever in Sydney let us know.

Johnny
Mmmmmmm. If I got a 40 knots + day I'd be over the moon.
What is the predominant wind at that time? Norwesters over here.
Probably would have to take over slalom board for the lighter days?
At the moment I'm trying to get a friend over to halve a few costs (van & accommodation) if he is keen then speed week here we come!
That was some pretty nasty chop there Johnny. We've all done that a few timesJavascript:insertsmilie('

Cheers guys. Dave
Hi David, I also went to speed fortnight - for the first 9 days anyway - last year and had a great time. Haven't laughed so much in years! Good sailing, good company and lots of bulls...ting about windsurfing. I'm planning to go for both weeks this year.
There is usually share accommodation organised with other speedies and this is much cheaper, more entertaining, and a great way to get to know other windsurfers. Contact Mat Robertson via the Speed Fortnight thread here for details.
Sandy Point is a magic place to sail and just to hang out anyway, but combined with a wide range of speed nutters from far and wide makes it even more fun.
Leave poor Pete alone he's got enough 2 worry about with his twin sister running the country!
Hey man how have u been going Lydia says hi, we may not make it 2 sandy this year
hope your still changing the world for the better...... like your sister is
all the best for sandy and everything
yours the prince of pittwater

Hey Johnny, I'm doing really well! Cheers to Lydia also. I hope you can make it to speed fortnight this year. If not there's always another year!
Red - I'll leave my gimp suit at home if you promise not to parade around Sandy Point in your mankini!!
