great effort on 300!!! well done lets have some stats!
did anyone else sail from the pit crew? if so its going to be a hard ave to catch!![]()
Yeah, congrats Kato, that's a massive effort!
Bit surprised you didn't get a 1hr in there as well thou.
Huge effort Kato!!!
How bad were the hands bleeding this time?
So close to the GPS-SS top distance
Furken amazing mate, I bet the beers tasted good, don't know how you would have lifted the can though.
Too tired last night to type anything coherent other than the basic stuff.
Had this trip in mind for a while but I just needed the right wind and tide. The forecast was a bit dodgy, but the tides were good. I was hopping for a south wind so I could use the speed bank and its flat water for most of the trip. This would mean 1-1.5km runs with lots of jibes. What I got was a 10-15kt Easterly with holes and a short flat section.
Started at 8 ish in really light wind, sub planning. Floated the first 4 km, but the breeze was starting to fill in. The first 40km a bit tough up and down wind, draft in the sail moving and the body starting to hurt. Got slammed twice in some squall so, time to come in and make some changes and catch up with a few of the crew who had finely got up. Next rest at 100km, food and drink stop. Wind was still all over the place, I, m starting to think that it’s not going to happen today. At 200km still feeling pretty good, the biceps are a bit sore from pumping out of the jibes. Having the SHQ fun race’s on at the same time kept things at bit interesting in dodging the competitors. Nearly got Daffy coming towards me. That sail just blended in against the other sailers. Everyone having fun and no major collisions. Not a lot of wind when they ran those races. Typical race days! They all packed up and went off to the surf for the expression session. Matt kept sailing for a bit longer. A short rest at 200km more food and drink.
No problems for the next 50 km, but the east bank was starting to disappear with the incoming tide, leaving short sharp chop to contend with. Not a lot of fun and very hard on the feet. Hit the bank on one of the runs and went over the front resulting in a new hole for the sail. Quick fix and back into it. The last 50km was hard work. The wind kicked up a notch or two and had the AB tailwalking through the chop plus my reactions were pretty ordinary by this stage. 20km to go and I started thinking about hot chips and beer. Did two more runs just to make sure I did 300, would have hated to leave it short after all that sailing.
Would I do it again? Yep! It was great fun, but I would do it in better conditions. More wind and south to take advantage on the flat water.
Is 400 possible? Yes given flat water and consistant wind.

Well done kato,
You beat us to it!!!![]()
I have the spot picked out - 20 - 30 km stretch and am waiting for the right breeze and direction. Sounds like hard work - well done mate. We all love a challenge - bring it on!!!
Cheers,
Carl
Hey Carl,20-30km long stretch sounds fun and remember there still a 400km out there somewhere and you did want to break a few more Pb,s before the comp finishes![]()
. The best distance in a day is 311km by Simon (GPSSS) and a guy sailed from Vic to Tas and Sydney to Vic has also been done back in the 80s . Any idea what the best one day distance is for a windsurfer is ? The 24hr for a boat is about 1200km. Theres a challenge![]()
