Anyone had any experience with the chinook carbon booms? Looking for a replacement 180 x 230, with a little less weight than the alloy.
Chinook have a 180 x 246 for the right price.
Any weak spots etc.
A freind just informed me of his troubles with the tail clamps on a certain brand, which turned me off that one.

Are you referring to the new Pro 1 Carbon. I am also waiting to see one in the flesh before I make my mind up. Stu Bell has a shipment in soon.

I bought a new one approx 12mths ago. it's a 170-237 carbon slalom. The boom clamp is crap[}:)]. If you tighten it it still has a wobble and slips down the mast sometimes.. The grip started peeling off after the first sail and now i glue it back on every few sails and it keeps coming off. I should have taken it back to the shop i got it from but i didnt get around to it and now it's too late.
As far as weight goes its as light as a feather and the wide tail end is great. i put up with it but i won't go Chinook again. My Areon carbon is light yrs better but is lot heavier.

I have the same boom and bought it in late 2009. I have had no problems with it and I bought it because I was sick of snapping aluminium booms every year.

So far so good, and I haven't had the problem of clamp slippage. It helps that I am now using Ezzy RDMs as they have a nice rubber spacer to make an RDM into SDM size for the boom.

The clamps do have this unusual pivot setup where the clamp itself pivots on a pin so that the clamp is not in a fixed position relative to the rest of the boom. It took a while to get used to, but I don't notice it anymore.

The cover is peeling at the front, but for me this is where I always start tearing booms, and all my booms have had this.

I do wish they marked the measurements on the foam though, just so I can cut down the time it takes me to adjust my harness lines each time.

Also, the wide tail on this is good. I think from what I have read that they changed from a narrow tail to the wider tail, and it definitely suits modern sails.

Just had a chat to the shop and found that this year they're using a new mast clamp. Same one as used on the aeron.

Just to mess with your head Pepe, I won't tell you how many times I've got to raise my boom in a session cause the useless head keeps slipping.

Have had to glue a layer of rubber unto the cup to attempt to get it to stay put.

Mine has a rubber insert held in place. Is that the same?

It doesn't slip, as far as I recall, but I haven't been sailing much since January, so its easy to forget.

A dumb question, but have you adjusted the tension by pulling through more rope?

The stainless parts on mine are showing some minor corrosion too. I guess its a different grade of stainless.

Yep done all of that.

The heads been an issue (besides the massive weight) from day dot which has progressively got worse.

Use formula line as head rope, continually adjust size as it's a 1 boom fits all sails set up.

Note, I'm not mentioning brands, but I'll not go down that path again

I have the Chinook 170-236, its never slipped, on rdm and sdm masts.
I use a rubber shim on the rdm's though which give a better grip.

Stiffnesswise they arent much better than a decent alu boom.
When this one goes I might go back to a decent quality alu one as they seem to have got a lot better recently

i own a chinook 170-236 carbon boom

has adjustable front end which i do not like as feels a little less secure.

also screw in front end has come loose so i cannot use till i find tool to tighten it, also screw is rusting badly.

what i like is extra long extension on chinook, which i swapped over to my aeron 145-185 boom, which now extends to 2 metres.

as for booms slipping on masts,it's the boom clamp combo with mast.

i have slippage with booms all the time, but on certain masts with wider diameter no slippage

Those that are using the Chinook boom,is it the new version.?? The Pro 1 carbon.

The head looks as if it has been changed and from what I can see on web pictures it looks the same as used on the latest Aeron. The only difference is the Aeron has rubber inserts on the lever and a name plate. If you look on the Chinnok head it has a "bow tie" moulding on the front of the head which matches the shape of the Aeron name plate. Coincidence ! There are a few other similarities such as the rubber insert at mast connection,sdm/rdm insert, lever profile. I hope to see one soon to compare with the Aeron
Lets hope they have changed the bolts to real 316. Shame to ruin what might be a good product for the sake of a few cents on good stainless fasteners.
