Kato just logged a 552km one day session - can anyone verify if this is the world record. What a mammoth effort - congratulations.

EDIT - just checked GPSSS 24 hr record www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=records&countryID=0&Gender=0&Year=-&SpeedType=2 and he has beaten his own record from Nov 2010 by 11km
I was talking with him on the day before he done this. I didn't see him on the day , but I understand he rose on the next day about 5am for his marathon drive home. I'm just proud to have met him.
Fantastic effort Craig! ![]()
I am sure this will be a new Distance record for both GPS-SS (24 hrs day) and GPSTC (one calender day).
Just received the files and it looks like 549.9km on Doppler. There will be a small deduction for possible error for the GPSSS record.
Fantastic one hour in that as well at over 27 Knots!!!! And a peak speed of 40 knots!!
More amazing, it looks like 465km in 12 hours!!!!
EDIT: I just realized that is a 21.1 knots average for 12 hours!
Just ran Mat's tracks.
440m!!! ![]()
Also 414 km in 12 hours!!![]()

if there's any chance you can make it I would love to personally congratulate you ,not only for your marathon effort but for over all dedication you have for speed sailing ![]()
im not sure who has worked it out but how many gybes in this sesh was it 2km laps is that 1 gybe every km or every 2kms did he do 500 odd gybes or 250 either way sh#t loads amazing stuff ?![]()
I have processed 2 shots of the man in action, there may be more, I took loads that day, when I get home, I'll go thru the rest.
I have a feeling the foreground sailor is young Izaac, can anyone confirm?
Nice one Kato,
but you and your gear might be all wonky now after going around in circles for so long.
. Best you do it again in the other direction to straighten yourself out.![]()
2 absolutely huge distances, 12 hours averaging 21 kts is astounding as is dropping 5 gybes in 300 ![]()
Well done to both Craig and Matt.
Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it turns out it is a very close thing. My initial analysis suggested to me that Craig exceeded his old record by about 2 km. That is not quite enough to establish a new WGPSSRC record. For that, one must exceed the old record by more than 1%, which would be about 5.5 km in this case.
Further, more careful analysis now puts Craig's recent distance at just over 538 km after deducting the calculated error margin, just a couple of KM short of his existing WGPSSRC World 24 Hour windsurfing record.
On the positive side, it is definitely the furthest distance sailed in a single calender day anywhere and is a new top distance mark in the GPSTC. I think it also the furthest distance anyone has sailed in 12 hours.
OK. Good news. I am wrong! It will be a new record. I was thrown out because the distance shown on the GPSSS records list is wrong. It says 541 km's for the existing record and Craig tells me it should be 531 km's. I checked and he is correct. The 541 was the raw distance before correction for error.
So it appears that Craig HAS sailed a new 24 hr record of around 538 km's.
well done Craig congratulations. It must be all that fire fighting that keeps you fit.
It would be nice to know how often you sail and what additional exercise you might do to obtain the endurance to get to these distances.
Makes me feel like an old man. I struggle to hold the rig after 50km and usually cramp up in the legs.
