Hey everyone,

On my last sail i went out and realised that my fastest run was on my second run of the day. This was a bit annoying because all i could see on the GPS screen for the rest of the day was my fastest time and couldnt see how i was going each run i did.

I was wondering how to set up that speed genie thing so i can look how fast i went after each run instead of just seeing my max speed for the whole day???

Cheers

You set the "reset speed" in "settings" , there's 2 entries, the first is "speed avg time".
The second is "Speed Genie"

For speed average time, you enter the time that you're interested in, for the team challenge that's 10. (5X10sec average), so when you come in you can average the 5 top 10sec readings and get your score.

For Speed Genie, I enter a speed that's going to be higher than my upwind speed but lower than my downwind. That means I can check the down wind run either at the end of that run, or when I get back to the start.
If you're always going to check at the end of the run, set it a bit lower, that means it will trigger on every run. (If I get a slow run, it may not trigger and I see my last fast one). But if you set it too low, it may not trigger, because you have to drop below the trigger speed to initiate a new reading. So higher than your highest min gybe speed, and lower than your slowest high speed.

Hope that makes sense, rereading it, it sounds a bit confusing.

The way I do it is this:

1) Put the GPS on your forward arm when you're going upwind (left arm for starboard tack speed runs)
2) As you go back upwind after your run, check the number. Then click the toggle, go down, click twice. This saves your run. Now double click the toggle again.

I find this easier than trying to read the speed genie which flicks between three screens -- when I'm bouncing around over chop going back upwind I'm only interested in my top speed for that run.

Speed Genie.. Love it. took me awhile to get the hang of it but as one who is pass that point where i need some things to help me read.. it's great. i set my speed to reset after a Gybe, can look at the screen at the end of a run or while sailing up wind before i pass my speed set/trip, mostly i just wait till I'm finished and then go to the reset function, can see the top 10 or 15 then! i also remember prior to the speed Genie.. pushing buttons and missing by one spot.. paused the unit for the rest of the session.. not happy.

LOVE IT! Fantastic, stupendously brilliant, better than sliced bread etc, etc.

By the way. Where are the smiley pics for a thumbs up?

I use speed genie all the time, but I think snides has a point, does it really need to cycle thru those 3 screens???
I think the split screen with small numbers is redundant, it would be better just to do a big number max speed and a big number average at a slower rate.
I find it close to impossible to read as it is while sailing, and if I'm trying to do an hour at the same time as speed runs, I just don't bother checking speeds till I stop.

i guess its great to have the option so every one can choose what suits them best...the function of seeing a 10sec ave after a run doesn't interest me as much as a peak speed does...at the end of the day you get the 10 sec average from the software anyway.
if you are a keen follower of the gpsss site then i can see some real advantages to knowing how you are fairing in the 10sec categories while you are sailing.
i must admit i found the genie a little confusing as it wasn't telling me how fast i had gone on a particular run just the 10sec ave (maybe i didn't have it configured properly?)
anyway as nebs mentioned i too, find it hard to concentrate on the screen while sailing, its got me stuffed how some guys can watch the speedo while sailing i would crash every time
so how many people have crashed while looking at their gps's?

If you generally sail with your eyes closed most of the time it's no problems.

It's you brave hearted soles who have the courage to look where you are going when barreling along that have the prob's.

I'm a "German Jiber" so I check mine and reset after each run

That's weird, mine flashes between 3 views, the big number max speed, the big number 10sec, then a small number split screen of them both. Think you're right your's may not be set properly.

yeah probably its been awhile since i used it last maybe i was all ways looking at it in time with the 10sec flashed up.
i know i changed it after i discovered while sailing 1 day that i had gone quite a bit faster than what i had thought.. obviously i had been watching the 10 sec read out....might try it again next time...am i correct in assuming the genie only works while in the genie window?

I'm fairly sure of that, but wouldn't want to stake my life on it!
