SailRocket warming up for its official attempt on the outright speed record at Walvis Bay with a 52.13 knot peak and 49.22 500m
Good to see such an appropriate sponsor too.
Nothing like a good curry to get you going !
Theyre the wind beneath my wings...
I had no idea how fast I had just been as the bastard GT31 gps we use is about the most useless piece of equipment we have on the boat for providing simple speed data. I despair at the people who design that crap! Later we saw did just shy of 48 knots and about a 45.2 knot 500 meter average. Nothing flash and about what it felt like.
Lol ![]()
Heck I don't understand speed genie...
Just give me my max speed please!
(First thing I did when setting up my 31 was turn that silly thing off)
Sorry nebs have to disagree with you there, speed genie is great when you set it up right.
You can see what the last run was and the session max, 2 sec and 10sec
And the big thing......
"if all else fails, read the instructions".
Mr sail rocket obviously has this problem.
Tom Chalkos' web site 'mtbestnet' has all the info these guys need, you just have to read it.
Maybe it's good if you get off and walk back after every run...
Trying to read your max speed when bouncing back up the course ready for the next run is just about impossible for me.
Anyway it's good that you can set it up to suit the sailor ![]()
Reading it while sailing is a problem, but that's the case whatever you do.
I quite often stop after I get back, then read the GPS before the next gust comes along.
All you have to do is set the speed genie trigger, higher than your upwind speed and lower than your downwind speed
The problem is that the display changes when the genie is active -- so new font or not when I get that one moment of weightlessness at the top of a piece of chop where my eyes can focus on the display I want it to show me my max speed on the run.
Then with a couple of quick toggles and button presses it's saved to memory and reset, ready for the next run, all without coming off the plane ![]()
Works for me, I'm sure that the genie is great for people that stop between runs but I like to keep sailing till I drop ![]()
I understand why Paul is frustrated with it.
Almost every time I ask someone here how fast their last run was they say "I dont know the GPS is a bit funny/didnt show the speed etc... I'll find out later when I download". That renders the GPS useless for tuning during the day.
It works fine in some places where there is no chop, or where you stop at the end of the run and have time to fiddle. But if the end of the run is deep water where you have to gybe and sail back to the beach, you lose the speeds of the run. Most of our sailing over here is like that.
So... to turn speed genie off, and always know how fast your last run was (ie you choose when to clear the max speed)
Settings->Speed Genie->OFF
I find even if I do jump off at the end of a run it is difficult to read the display inside the aquapac. You have to get your arm in just the right position relative to the sun...
As for reading it while sailing, I wouldn't even try!
If you fellas have too much data from Speed Genie, go into MISC, scroll through and set only the data you want to see
ie
turn MAX/NS MAX ......off
HISTORY MAX .....off
MAX SPEED ....on
NS MAX AVG .....off
NEW FONT......on (good for me and the other old and going blind among us)
Make sure you set speed genie (in SETTINGS) to a speed above your upwind speed
ie if you're doing 18-22kts upwind and above 30 downwind, set it at 30.
You're not likely to be above 30 going back upwind and speed genie will hold the reading and display it to you until you exceed 30 again.
Put the aqua pack on your forearm near your elbow and its a piece of p to read it as you head back upwind. And if you only have MAX SPEED set, that's all it will show you.
well Nebs I can just presume the Company never intended it to be seen like a windsurfer would take a look at it once every run..maybe emailing them might give them an idea for next yrs. model if they understand everyone's needs![]()
I agree with Nebs, I never use the speed genie just too hard to read,
plus puting on and off the reading glasses while sailing is too bloody hard.
my solution is turn it off and then go to max then restore fatest speeds click on top one to dispaly and then lock (4 seconds on big button.) then It will always display the fastest max speed in big font until you beat it and the next one takes over.
most times I just sail and enjoy myself and only look at it at the end of the day. for me sailing comes first and the numbers just happen.
