Bought my first 'speed sail' and I'm wondering if there's any tips on how to correctly rig the sail.
How much downhaul?
What's the easist way to pop the cams on the mast?
I'm using an SDM mast and loft boom.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
After busting my KA koncept i read the instructions by Andrew Daff.![]()

I recently took the forum advice of Sailquik (who I think knows a thing or two about Koncepts) to attach the boom head before even putting any downhaul on at all i.e. sail still loose along mast. Don't tighten boom lever as boom needs to still slide down mast as downhaul is applied. Made rigging much simplier since the KA's are rigged starboard* side (the cam zippers dictate this), the boom head can be quite difficult to attach if the luff pocket is taut from being downhauled. I've wondered though why KA just don't change the side the cam zippers are on to conform to the majority of boom head attachments i.e. easier to attach boom on a port side position.
* by starboard side I mean with the sail rolled out and standing at the foot, the luff pocket is on the right with zippers facing up. Most other sails have their cam zippers on otherside which means the luff will be on the left when rolled out.
Mine rigs exactly per specifications, and on an NP X3 mast!
I slide the mast over the cams, downhaul about half way, put on the boom, apply outhaul, pop on the cams, apply the rest of the downhaul, adjust boom height.
Ah ha yes , why the zippers on the starboard side????
Well as the sail was developed as a speed sail at Sandy point we wanted it to be optimised for Starboard tack speed sailing therefore making the Port side luff pocket as smooth as possible. Simple as that.
I have a 5.0 and 5.8 and as the guys say put the boom on before any downhaul,
I run zero outhaul and sometimes even a little negative,
you can over downhaul the 5.8 but the 5.0 seems to like a bit more on it.
I ran a X3 mast for a bit at the start on the 5.8 and it is way too loose in the leach causing it crease the monofilm from flapping like crazy when going upwind, I now run the proper KA 70% mast and it is sweet.
In the 5.0 I run a 400 fibrespar tidal wave that I always used in my ezzy wave sails and it sets and runs sweet,
these sails have got me over 40 knots with no problem and are very stable and comfy of the wind.
thanks for all the advise.
I watched Dr Love on the weekend rig the new KA's at Inverloch. I think I'll try a couple combinations and find which one suits me.
I'll be running the NP X3 mast. That's all I've got and can afford!
Check this. It's from bac in 08 but I still rig the same way. :-)http://www.kasail.com/windsurfing/sails/2008/ka%20_koncept_2008_rigging_guide.pdf
And this from 2007. Methods have really not changed at all:
