Putting the second one in a closed metal box will severely restrict it's GPS operation, unless you oven it to get a fix! ??

Looks like a better version ( 50m waterproof/more functions /bigger display) of the Canmore G porter 102+ which I have and am very impressed with.

Looks great YoYo. Reading through the instruction manual it doesn't seem to have a nautical brain... not a knot in sight but I can't find any retail outlets for it or any prices.....any knowledge of that?

I have one of those

pros :
easier reading (larger font)
1s recording (doppler)
similar data to the gp102 (through gps results)
totally waterproof (usb peg)
charges real fast
looks good
speed alarm (vibrates when you reach your goal)

cons :
stopped working after a week, won't start (but my mate's one still works so maybe I got the faulty one)
no max speed
takes ages to log on satellites at every use
just km/h no knots (like the gp102)
data can't be sent directly to ka72, needs to go through canway software first and re export or else it's all very wrong !! (110 knts !)

I asked the company to upgrade the software to knots and max speed, still waiting for an answer...
expect retail price above 200$
and no more colours, it's black or black

Knots would be nice but getting used to km/h. Talking to non yachties it is all they understand. If it had the 102+ speed, ave speed and max speed page would be nice. Should be a simple firmware upgrade.

Wazza, Amazon has them at $169 and Cluey solutions suggests they will stock them locally.

Hmmm.... that picture came out bigger than it was on the web.. all the better to see

Sean how are they on warranty? Or are they claiming consumer damage?

Also I found the Canway software dumbs down the data. GPSresults give 10 decimal (9?) places on the Lat/long if it is used to get data from the Canmore gps whereas the Canway gpx files have about 3 decimal places less.

no answer yet from Canmore re the warranty.

I asked Dylan to check the files (they come out as gpx) when he returns from Cairns and finds a little time.

as for the photo, only the time display is that big, when in gps mode you end up with 3 smaller lines.

Don't know if relevant but if when you stop, the gps goes in pause mode, and restarts when you take off again.

Nice to see a posting take a direction you did not expect beforehand...

Off-topic to the extreme - 6 out of 6 postings not about the original device I posted

The main point about Raymond's project is that the device he is developing, conforms to GPSSS standards.
And the other ones posted here, do not AFAIK.

Any successor of the GT-31 should be at least as good from a measurement accuracy point of view.
If you don't care (enough) about measurement accuracy then you could just as well use your phone.

LOL sorry Ned for the thread hijack

in my defense Yoyo started it !!

But as you said it all depends on people expectations, I'll probably (surely) never break the 40 knts barrier so a simple gps is fine for me.
it's a different matter for the serious sailors and record hunters...

As for the phone maybe the logit app from your fellow countryman will prove you wrong

cheers
Sean

Hey Ned you're with the Aussies now!
Nothings stays on topic long here, there's too much fun to be had.
I must admit at times it's a bit frustrating, but after a while you get used to it.

And Sean's got it right, if anything goes wrong, --- blame yoyo.
