NB 4 WA Speedsters. Those thinking about sailing Hardies Run in next few days be warned that there are very low tides with a big High Pressure system. DPI Storm Surge data is showing minus 15cm. Be careful sail well out to windward of PVC markers to avoid major damage and injury. Lots of damage has occurred to fins in last few days, and it's onlygetting lower. Bring small weedies, preferably 23cm at 45degrees. 25cm is about biggest I would run anywhere near the run and at 45 degrees. Unless you know the run really well, and be particularly warned if you are a first timer, you may be better off going for hours and distance instead. It's tempting to foillow the locals in close but they are taking calculated risks. I have shortened my favourite 39 kt weedy from a 23cm to a 21cm, in last couple of days.

Was thinking along the same lines Joe.

Kind of reluctant to update the speed table due to liability issues as it could be perceived as influental in encourageing 70km/h + speeds in calf deep water.

Need to think some more on this.

my thoughts excactly!
apart from the obviuos dangers of spinal injury due to running aground at hi speeds (think Claude had a near miss the other day?)there is the issue of being lost at sea! as well.
the part of the estuary where we sail is prob its widest point at aprox 8-9ks
i have destroyed a sail (ripped from luff to leach) out at about 3-4ks and this was a significant situation. as it happened the water was prob the busiest i have seen it and after about an hour i managed to flag a pasting boat down that toed me into the shallows for the star of a 2 km walk....i got out of it with out too much trouble.
an incident over the other side would be a nightmare that would prob involve some sort of rescue service to come to your aid.
i reckon it would be a good idea to carry the following.
smoke flares min of 2 (most ledge to lano sailors would have these anyway)
mobile phone in a water proof pouch
cash for an expensive 1/2 hr? journey back to the other side
also water would be a good thing to have as well
the easiest way to carry all this stuff would be in a life jacket such as the neil pryde vairiety.
just my thoughts on the subejct of safety.

Good addition Snides.

The other issue that you mentioned needs to be emphasised, there is heaps of boat traffic atm and not all give way to sail as they should Elmo was had a power boat not give way to him yesterday, causing Elmo to wipe out Too many fn cowboys out at this time of year. So be bloody careful out there!!!!!!!!!!

I believe Snides makes a very relevant point here. particularly for the people who chaes good distance and hour figures by sailing for long legs.
How do you keep the flares dry Snides? ( I need to do this for the LOC as well as distance sailing)

Besides smoke flares, JaaCee purchased elcheepo pre paid mobile, I take that with me in Aquapak when sailing across down there Not so keen on smoke flares, as have seen what happens when these little f......s go off close to flesh
But gear checks are a must, and running with a teammate or a buddy is a bloody great idea
