Hey guys,

Just wondering what sort of speeds have been achieved on no cam and non full race sail set ups.

Cheers

I know the KA Koyotes have gone over 40 knots.

For my home spot, the top speed I got on my no cam koyote was 32.08 knots. The top speed here is 35 knots (set by a luderitz competitor)

So have NCX's, I've gone 40+ with both Koyote's & NCX's.

My best NCX sessions this year are here:
gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?team=48&date=2014-03-01
gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?team=48&date=2014-02-28

These were the last sessions i sailed TBH, besides 2 SUP surf sails. Terrible winter for wind down here

If you want something that is waaaay different to non race set up speed sailing - google Spotty's Speedsailing SUP Vid on Utube

37.29 on a Severne S1 5.3...it was far too windy for my smallest cammed sail

If you have flat'ish water and LOT's of wind (eg35-40+ knots), the issue I can become more about control rather than power and efficiency. If you don't have a cammed sail small enough, you will probably do better on whatever you have that you can still keep completely under control and be able to apply the power you have.

Even in moderate winds, a well balanced setup with a good no cam free ride sail can be only a knot to two behind a cambered race sail.

No one aspect of your speed setup is as important as the total balanced package. The board, fin, setup positions of straps and track and the setup and type of sail all must work together to complement each other and your own size, weight and skill level in the particular conditions you have. If any of these things is way off, or the components are not well matched it will drastically affect your ultimate performance. There is no magic formula for this but logic, trial and error and experience will help you find the balance.

eg: Back in about 2006, I went out on my SB Acid 74 wave board with standard wave fin and 3.7m KA Kaos wave sail in a 35+ knots Easterly at Sandy Point and cracked 40 knots peak speed. What is normally a relatively slowish board turned into a rocketship in 35+ knot gusts on flat water as it got up on the last few cm of the narrow pintail and took off downwind. I am sure I would go at least low to mid 40's on my CA40, 18cm Tribal speed fin and 5m KA Koncept in the same conditions now, and do it much more consistently, but hell it was fun!

There is nothing wrong with a no cam or a 3 cam slalom sail, most guys do not need a full on race sail, just forget the sheep stations, my thoughts

Personally and honestly I'm a mid average sailor, I've done just under a 37 on a Loft 5.9 no cam and a 39.5 on a 5.8 Loft 3 cam Switchblade, I'm fairly positive a 40 was doable but I was down south with no wetty and was too bloody cold

Now that Loft in Aus is kaput, I'm in the process of changing over to KA Koncepts, 3 cams and a luff pocket not too wide, sweet

Had a couple of 41s on a 6.5 NCX, the best was 41.88 kn.
This was on a Mistral 47, with a CL24W fin.
Conditions- 30 knots, sailing near a sandbank and slingshot into a bit of chop.
