Congratulations Pieter!"
That is farking impressive - it's rough there!!!!
I'd be stoked with 42knots on flat water
I'd be stoked with flat water
I'd be stoked if I didn't have keep reaching for a 7+m sail wondering if I've rigged big enough.
It is...but in fairness, he was only there for a week and there were no big days. Most of the other guys above him on the list live there so they have got the pick of the conditions.
Having said that, those speeds are just incredible in open water and amongst breaking surf. Cohones the size of beach balls that bloke!
Peter is fast. I have seen his original track file and there were some doppler runs there that were completely screwed (some of the data fields were corrupt) indicating a problem with the downloading of the track. One of the runs had him peaking at over 47 knots but the direction component was at about 90 degrees to the track... His trackpoint data was showing differences of 5 knots. Hopefully the data posted has been freshly recovered from the GPS and does not suffer from obvious corruption like that used for his GPSSS post.
Yeah I was a bit stuffed in Maui for speed. That day the wind was dropping down to 10-12kts or less, and I got caught on the inside at sprecks and there wasnt enough wind to lift the sail, let alone get me going on my speed board. So swam in over the reef and busted up my sail. I won that round with that low speed.
Cool where do I post this result from Port Phillip Bay to get in that list? Chop was about 30-50cm. Wind 25knots.

You want to claim a Maui ranking in Port Phillip Bay?
This just came through from Maui Windsurfing Association;
"Correction:
Pieter set the new record on Monday the 24th of November (not Thursday).
Sorry for confusion."
So there you go. I just copied and pasted it from an email, and no, I'm not there and neither is Slowy, (though it's fair to say we wish we were!) it's just a ranking for 2008. They should have included dates to make it clearer.
Maybe we should have an Aussie open water speed category ![]()
and yes I do sail mainly in open water.
Could we have one for left handed wave board sailors, I might do alright at that.
Sorry missed the bit about Maui open water only. Probably flatter at Kanaha than Port Phillip Bay , which had about 2km of open water upwind! Then again, there's chop and there's chop...
