Starting to think i need to get a speed board as i feel as if i have nearly pushed the sonic90 to it's limit and i i think it's starting to hold me back. Also in the heavier winds the board feels like a very large unit to sail. Was thinking along the lines of a Isonic50 or carbon art 44 and i weigh 62 kg's. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Jordan

The 44 has my vote. A bit more volume would probably help in sub-SP conditions vs the ca40 and you would have less of a gap to the 90l sonic. Plus how long do you plan to stay 62kg? :P

Slowies probably the best guy to ask about this though..

CA40 for your size, it is 5lt less than the 44, and you will be able to handle it a lot easier than the 44 when its going off.

As if you need my 2 cents, think seriously about the SP40. I'm 77kg and can get it to 39 knots in 22knots of wind with a 5.8 and can get it planing in just under 18knots at Sandy Point. Of course, when you need it to it will go as fast as you can, 45.5 knots in my case.

Don't forget that within reason, the fin is more important than the board for speedsailing, so spend properly here. There's not much difference between the 44 and 40 in top speed but fins make a huge difference.

Ask the slow guy for more thoughts. Happy sailing.

im 17 at the moment and i definitely think im going to put more weight on. i reckon i ll end up at around 70 kg's. Does this change things at all. Also i heard that the isonics are really good in the chop or is this just the slalom isonics. Cheers

Hi Jordan I have a IS49, most of the stuff up here is mainly chop except for maybe Burrums heads I just need to run a bit bigger fin in the choppy stuff
For you weight I would go down to the IS43.
If you love the IS slaloms you should love there speed boards.
Lots of good boards out there best to try a few first if ya can.

Thanks Vando just to be clear do you think the isonics are better in the chop or does this just depend on the fin.

Hi Jordon I do think the Isonics ride very well in the chop and like any board fins do play a part.
I havnt riden boards like the CA40 so cannot comment which is better just that im very happy with the Isonics.

I am 92 kilos and my CA sp 40 still does it for me in the flat water
I am going to get an sp44 soon, mainly because they are so wicked in the rougher more marginal
conditions.
Don't let vando mess with ya Carbon Arts rule and that Seabreeze Ad looks like a pretty good deal

Hi Jordan,
Not the CA44. For your weight the Carbon Art 40 would be good for flat water speed conditions. I am 75kg and find the CA44 too scary loose for me. It suits heavier guys better from 80-85kg up.
I really like the Starboard IS50 when conditions are choppy (for a flat water speed course ). It rides very smooth and safe in radical conditions. Maybe not the ultimate edge in ultimate speed conditions that the CA40 has, but there is not much in it and the confidence it gives me to push to the limit can often more than make up the difference. From what I have seen of the newer IS speed boards, they also look like they ride very safe and smooth over chop. Go for the smallest one though if you look in this direction. In comparison, the small CA duo are a lot looser and more high strung. For the CA40, that puts me a bit more on the edge, a lot more flighty, but just in control and in ideal conditions give a slight edge in top speeds. The CA44 for me is over the edge and feels like it is about to take off and fly at any moment. Not conducive to building confidence.
There are probably some very good deals around on IS50's and for your weight you will find it carries you very well in marginal speed conditions (18-20 knots) as well as feeling good right up to full on manic conditions (30-35+ knots). The IS 50 will work better in most conditions with a more raked fin as well, and if you are under 6ft you will benefit from a closer, more rearward stance on speed runs. see Toms pictures here: http://www.mtbest.net/isonic50.html My board it set up the same for Starboard tack speed runs.

You might consider this board as well:

Hope this helps

the few times I've tried chris's ca44 I though it was the most controlled board I've ever ridden! Especially in chop! I guess personal preference about ride looseness is another factor worth conidering then...

Hey Jordan,

The SP40 is shorter than the SP44 and has a lower nose, so its better suited to full on speed conditions. Most of the time I use the SP44 because it is safer and more settled in most types of chop than the SP40. I weigh around 90kg. The SP44 built after Jan 2008 have a slightly different profile to the one that Daffy would have tried. The newer ones are a lot more controllable in stronger wind. They dont pop wheelies as easily but they are still really loose.

A good way to choose between the 40 and 44 is to look at the speed potential of the day and location. If the fastest guys cant do more than 40kts in the conditions you are sailing in then the 44 is likely to be a better choice than the 40. Hope that helps!
