Looking at the forecast on seabreeze it seems like theres a good day to be had at mandurah tomorrow- 18-25 kts increasing throughout the day.
Questions for mandurah mob pplz
Im wondering if hardies run is going to be sailable tomorrow-
Will the tide be high enough?, and what times (if any) will this occur? (does the fremantle tide forecast relate much to mandurah?)
..how accurate is the mandurah wind meter (seabreeze) on a sw direction?
Also is the estuary really weedy right now? Id like to have a go at 1hr/distance PB's but only if i can get away with a pointer. (and is 35deg enough on a weedy 4 hardies?)
any advice appreciated..
Tim Stockton
G'day Tim,
Good load of questions so we'll go through the list.
Hardies run
The Tide is real low at the moment all day so we'll be running outside of what we would normally class as Hardies.
People who haven't sailed there for the last 3 weeks will notice quite a few new markers out on the run, on a lower tide DO NOT SAIL INSIDE THIS AREA the markers are the outer limit of the fin breaker reef.
Wind will need to swing to SW's a min to get the right direction for Hardies anyway.
Tides
As I stated earlier we have very low tides at the moment, best bet for launching would be from the powered boat ramp, from there you can walk up the channel with your board floating in the channel whilst you are in less than knee deep water, other than that if you launch fro the normal spots you will have to walk your gear out +250m to get to deep enough water. The tides are low all day at this time of year.
Wind Strength
Bit hard to call this one as the readings are taken at the Mandurah marina about 15km away slightly inland. Normally it's not to bad.
Weed
As I haven't sailed for the past 3 weeks I don't know the exact state of the estuary i can't say for certain what the conditions are like, but I would guess that as there hasn't been any recent storms as well as the little tide differences I think it will be ok in the deeper parts to go with pointers.
The closer runs like Hardies I would still go with a weedy as we had some massive weed (and Algae) problems earlier on.
1 hour and distance runs
Once away from the shallows 1 hours should be ok. The forecast is for WSW with later SSW change, Hardies is Ideal on SSW same as the distance run to the big platform (5km legs), the WSW should be able to give runs across the estuary of 2-3km. If you want a longer run on this direction you will have to go a bit down wind (700m) from the main boat ramp so as o clear the sand bar on the other side of Cox Bay, going the other side of the sand bar can add +1.5km to leg.
Once the wind swings SW or SSW then 5-7km legs are possible again.
35º weedy should be ok when you are moving, just may be a problem getting onto plane in a heavy weeded area.
I had Yoyo tell me this morning that some off the Perth Riff Raff were going to come down and try to rack up a few km's, will be good to make a day of it, Ben was talking about hitting it early to get in a full day.
Hope this helps, If anyone has any questions give us a call on my Mob and we'll try to help out.
Just hope the wind eventuates tomorrow, I've had 3 weeks of the water now I'm really getting twitchy, probably sail kookyier than normal
As a side note, I personally don't trust 20-30knot forecasts, have been dudded to many times.
If you want to Guarantee the wind arriving bring your formula kit as well
thanks 4 the info...
i agree about the formula kit... except, with my 5 piece formula boom, im limited to 6.6 and less. Hopefully the forecast will eventualy though... need to break in the new 5.8... And im seriously missing the glassy water that is mandurah when compared to the swan..
