cheapest device approved for GPSTC is the mini motion. it's not a watch and has no display. But people are using it in conjunction with any old watch capable of showing your speeds.
If you really want just one device the only watch approved is the GW60, it's great when it's working!
The very best all round device is the big motion, but there's a big delay in getting one.
Yours for $100. PM me.
Doesn't look like a GPSTC approved device to me
Funniest thing I have seen during lockdown. Thanks. ![]()
in WA so I don't have a problem with going out for a send ![]()

GPS's are a lot of work to maintain. They have endless energy so they need to be run a lot and 'watched' very closely in case you lose them off in the distance. ![]()

At least someone got it!
GSP = German Shorthaired Pointer - that's the dog not the watch...she can do 25 knots over the 500 ;)
Another possibility is to make your own. Flex has just made this, and it doesn't look too difficult.

It's not approved yet, but I don't think it will be a problem, once he's sent a few comparison files in to be evaluated.

What ever you do "DO NOT SPEND ANY MONEY ON A GW60 WATCH" they should be banned due to total product ****ness and are the biggest piece of **** gps watch on the planet, they truely are a flog joke...I think if you hade the money and went to a really really really good lawyer they could build a class action against gw60 for failing to meet advertised standards. They are truely ****. On the up side motions are pretty good, easy downloading and so far seem to have excellent waterproofness, heaps of memory and fantastic battery life. Garmin watches are the best, expensive but you can't down load from them. The powers to be must have had their cv's revoked from garmin or something ? I don't know seems weird to me that the garmins are not allowed. Figure garmin Corp have bigger brains, development team than the governing body of gps chalange ? Don't figure...weird hey...Garmin is used world wide...including bombing the **** out of stuff, but **** not accurate enough for bragging wrights windsurfing..WTF?

The GW-60 is a very good, (but certainly not perfect) product while it is working and if it is very carefully looked after. Many of us have had quite a few years of great use from them. Many others have found the watchbands fall apart quite quickly (happens more in the warmer climates and if people wear the band against their skin - wearing over the wetsuit sleeve does not seem to have this effect on tham). The buttons are also not waterproof enough for use when wet or submerged and will eventually leak or rust. But if you don't use them while sailing, that takes a very long time to occur, if ever. The Usb connector is also a source of trouble for some. For around $350, they can be good value for a few years, are accurate enough, have validation data, and are very convenient to wear. Keep in mind that when they were first released, many sailors thought they were the Holy Grail. ![]()
The Motion LCD IS pretty much perfect in just about every way for GPSTC speed sailing, and the Mini Motion is pretty much the perfect screen-less logger. Tough, waterproof, easy to use and extremely accurate. The only downside is there is a long waiting list for acquisition.
Lots of testing and evaluation has proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the Garmin watches are good for running and cycling, maybe even great, but that they are also crap for windsurfing competition. They do not use the accuracy of Doppler calculation and they have no error data to validate the results. They are subject to large unexplainable errors, and sometimes, you wont know when they do have errors. Thats just fact, and easily demonstrated, as it has been over and over. On the other hand, purely for ball park on the water direct feedback as you sail, they can be very good indeed with tbwonder's excellent feedback app.
The superseded GT-31 and GW-52, sometimes available second hand, are also very good GPSTC devices as long as you keep them in a waterproof container.
