Waterproofing any sort of device with a usb cable plugged in isn't possible. Just by placing both in a case means that there will be only one level of protection, any moisture or leaks WILL kill both devices.
Currently working on a case that will protect a phone and external battery for a side project but still can't protect when plugged in to cables....ideas???
The case is good for 3m at 4hrs so far
True if the connectors are not waterproof. If they can make the USB connector on the GPS waterproof, it is only the auxiliary battery device that may be a problem.
So do I buy a GT31(if possible?) or wait for the new one to come out(when??)?
Can anyone quickly explain what the new one offers over the old?
Cheers
Sorry to be abrupt before. Here is an answer.
The GX-52 offers 5hz logging (v's 1hz logging) and significantly better accuracy.
Slightly smaller Physical size.
Almost everything else is better in the GT-31
Cheers Sailquick. I was just looking for a condensed list as it all over the place and that I am new, i am still learning all the jargon.
Has anyone thought about writing an APP so we can use our smart phones, that already have waterproof cases available, can use touch screens, have large batteries, large screens and readily available to everyone.
Pls note I have no idea about programming. Locosys could even provide the writing? maybe?
PS I have had no luck locating a GT31 thus far
If you don't need to be approved by gpstcc (?) you can use any gps app available on play store.
I use "open gps tracker" and "gps speed talker", both on waterproof phones, plenty enough for me.
It all depends if you want to be part of the challenge or just enjoy seeing your speed after your session (I post to Ka 72.com, just awesome !!)

Hi Simon,
This is Kathy, sales manager from LOCOSYS.
Thanks for your feedback and opinions for our GW-52. The specification of GW-52 hasn’t be completely fixed yet. Our target is to make it compatible with GT-31/BGT-31 both in price and waterproof IPX7 Level. We will ship out our device to our selected agent for trail very soon. If there’s any update, we will keep you posted. We understand that customers (especially for the windsurfing customers) prefer to have a product with higher waterproof level (like IPX8) and with a ruggedized housing. We estimate that it will make the unit price become 3 more times higher than the price of GT-31/BGT-31 to fulfill those requirements. The C/P value is relatively low both from user and manufacturer point of view.
More than that, the size and weight will be double at least than current unit. We doubt if it is suitable for arm or wrist wearing for extreme sports. This is the main reasons LOCOSYS decided to focus on IPX7, and the unit price will compatible with GT-31. We only suggest our windsurfing customers to use GW-52 with a water proof bag to protect the unit as GT-31 does. (IPX7 is still not enough for extreme sports)
In addition, GW-52 has its particular speed genie function for surfing users. The speed genie function is designed to display the speed result (max, max avg) after every session. There is no need to operate the device whiling surfing. You can refer to our user guide or contact us for more information. As to the memory size, based on 1Hz update rate, totally 120,000 points can be stored which equal to 33 hours operation. In order to keep its compact size, the battery capacity is limited to around 8 hours. Users can extend the volume by using external USB battery packs.
This is the lastest email that I have sent
Hi Kathy, thanks for your reply. Plugging in an external battery will void any waterproofing that the GW 52 has and leave both the unit and battery exposed to any moisture or incidental water exposure. If you commit the company to building a sub standard replacement to the GT 31 that lacks good battery and storage the windsurfing comunity will not buy it and will adapt other devices such as mobile phones and data loggers. There are users that are currently working with designers now.
Having a storage unit that can store 33hrs of infomation but only operate around 8hrs is useless to most users.
Dont build this product in its current design!!!
Different reply but info passed on to the designers.
Keep sending the emails as it will help get a better out come

Here is how this letter should read in my opinion..

Thanks for your feedback and opinions for our GW-52. The specification of GW-52 hasn’t be completely fixed yet and we are entering a final consultation stage of the design to ensure maximum sales of our exciting and innovative product. Our target is to make it comparable with GT-31/BGT-31 both in price and waterproof IPX7 Level, however we now understand that to make the unit fit for purpose for any outdoor activity including Windsurf, Kitesurf, Stand Up Paddle, Sailing, Kayak, Surf Ski and Mountain Biking to name but a few, we will need to develop our product further to achieve IPX8. We have a carefully selected Research & Development Team including elite members of the Windsurf, Kitesurf, SUP, Sailing and MTB Communities and will ship out our device to our selected agent for trail very soon. If there’s any update, we will keep you posted. We understand that customers (especially for the windsurfing, customers) prefer to have a product with higher waterproof level (like IPX8) and with a ruggedized housing. We estimate that it will make the unit price become 3 more times higher than the price of GT-31/BGT-31 to fulfill those requirements. The C/P value is relatively low both from user and manufacturer point of view. More than that, the size and weight will be double at least than current unit. We acknowledge that the C/P value in making these improvements in the specifications has overwhelming potential to reach many more consumer groups and we are in consultation with our Marketing Consultants and our Consumer Group Experts to develop and deliver an exiting marketing campaign - with the increased consumer base we can keep the cost of the GW-52 right down and we will be able to attract users who currently use other brands such as Suunto and Garmin We doubt if it is suitable for arm or wrist wearing for extreme sports. This is the main reasons LOCOSYS decided to focus on IPX7, and the unit price will compatible with GT-31. We will till recommend our windsurfing customers to use GW-52 with a water proof bag to protect the unit as GT-31 does. We have observed that some users are developing their own secondary protective hard cases and we are taking into consideration the positions of the connection ports and user interface to best enable safe and practical use of the GW-52 within these secondary containments. It may be possible for us to develop an accessory pack for the GW-52 or even to make it compatible with a n existing widely used fixing/mounting system such as a camera mount. (IPX7 is still not enough for extreme sports) In addition, GW-52 has its particular speed genie function for surfing users. The speed genie function is designed to display the speed result (max, max avg) after every session. We understand that it is important to be able to access the units ON/OFF and FUNCTION buttons while the device is within its secondary enclosure as this will ensure no moisture including condensation can be avoided. There is no need to operate the device whiling surfing. can refer to our user guide or contact us for more information. As to the memory size, based on 1Hz update rate, totally 120,000 points can be stored which equal to 33 hours operation. In order to keep its compact size, the battery capacity is limited to around 8 hours. We understand that for many users this is battery capacity is insufficient and we are now working on a battery with 30-40hrs of continuous use at 5Hz. We are investigating the most practical way to include the additional 2GB of memory the GT-31. We are also addressing concerns that the antenna we intended to use will not suffice and we will increase the size and position it better.
We are very pleased to have continual feedback and support and we, like you, believe that we will go to market with a world-class innovative device.

Good day all, well just found this site and thought I would add my tuppence worth. I am from the uk and sail regularly all year round. I use a Garmin 800 Edge which is fully waterproof and has a, USB charging port. I have never put in a waterproof bag. I also have a Canmore 102 which I have to put in a waterproof bag. The canmore was so cheap at under £50.00 and works fantastically and seams very accurate. I had to buy Parallels desktop so I could install windows to be able to use on my Apple Mac. And this devise is just tiny and has a fantastic battery life. I did have another Canmore 102 and the bag let in water and it made the screen unreadable. My Garmin 800 edge works just great. I read some where that it's not as accurate as the Canmore 102 and GT. So how can Garmin make a waterproof devise with a great battery life and the makers of newer version of the GT 31 blame the fact, it will cost more, HELLO !!!!! I hope the makers are reading this. Don't you get it, people will buy your product if it waterproof and also super accurate. Look at the prices of a Garmin top products, not cheap but waterproof and people buy them. Please feel free to reply. My last question. What is the most accurate gps devise out there ????? Because I want it ![]()
Also just need to add. Also have bought a TRACE gps. This devise does need to be stuck on to what you are using and has to have the arrow facing Forward. I dare not stick it to my windsurfing board in fear of my mast knocking it off. For the record, it's fully waterproof. So any one out there worked out where to stick it, no rude comments please lol ![]()
Hi Plettil, well if I understand you correctly, I downloaded trace sync and it downloads onto trace surf to see details of ones runs. I need to figure out how to attach to it is facing forward as that what the instructions tell you to do, any ideas where to put it on a windurfer ??? Do you own a Trace gps, if so what do you use it on ????
Hello,
no I don't have any but I am interested... I would like to be able to take out the statistics of my sessions with the normal 5x10s, 100m, 500m, 1nm, time.... And I use GPSAR to analyse the tracks from my phone today. I would like to be able to compete from time to time and today, only few and GT-31 are "validated"...trace is not..yet...
I would put it on the helmet I think, because like you I am afraid to wipe it of. Maybe on top of the rear footstrap, or just behind one or at rear end of the board, close to the fin screw...or very close to the mast foot....with the height of the joint, it should not ripe it off? Don't know...
