hey looking for some advice...
I bought my dad a new GT-11 for his chrissy present however am having troubles loading the new firmware onto it. i follow the instructions on the mt best site (http://mtbest.net/setting-up-navi-GT-11.htm) however i get an error message come up. iv'e tried the different comp. ports but all have the same issue. it says "com1 (or com2 com3, whichever) open error" or just nothing happens at all!!!
Just looking for some advice on what to do... i can remember having this same problem when i was setting mine up earlier this year but i don't remember what happened or anything i did for it to work. just looking for someone who knows what their doing.
Cheers

G'Day Bubs, didn't think there where any gt11s left. Sure you didn't get a gt31?
The firmware for that will be different. And if you're using your old gt11 update software, I'm not sure how well that "talks" to a gt31.
So what exactly is the error message?
Remember you should just go to "navilink" without "clicking" on it.
last GT-11 in Australia i reckon i got. and i had to shop around as well... called about 5 stores before i found one i think.
yes im using the same firmware as for my GT-11... want them to be the same. i get error message "target not responding!" when i try it.

okay so here what i do step by step lol....
- download firmware from http://mtbest.net/setting-up-navi-GT-11.htm and unzip.
- plug GPS into comp. via USB.
- turn on GT-11 and go to navilink.
- put in CD and go to firmware update.
- select correct com port (have tried every one except com2 never comes up???)
- select the unzipped file NAVI_FW.S
- click execute.
- comes up with error message of "target nor responding"
so yeah not sure what to do. i think i did it once last time on mine and it just worked all of a sudden lol.... i cant remember though!!!

Heading down this Friday for a while again like last year.... cant wait should be awesome. hopefully get over 30 at the channel (fingers crossed) after doing my 27+ at the mouth a week or so ago i'm getting more confident with my technique and all that so hopefully conditions hold up. slowly getting there. would be nice to pull off at least a couple good gybes also but we'll see. looking forward to it.
Might also be heading down this Tuesday also if conditions hang around. Are you going to be around either Tuesday or for those couple weeks???
Cheers

Bubs, for next time here are the instructions from Tom Chalko's website for uploading firmware. I think the reason it worked is because you didn't go to Navilink, because that is not required when uploading firmware. Note item 5 most importantly because you will need a different process next time, now that you have updated.
"It is very important to use the latest GT-11 firmware. Both features and performance are significantly enhanced by the firmware upgrade. Please don't complain about lack of features or performance if you do not use the latest firmware. GT-11 firmware develops very rapidly (daily). Test versions work very well and improve steadily. Remember that we TEST the firmware under development. Please report any strange behavior here.
1. Download the latest software
a) firmware (1115.rar or 1115.zip)
b) NaviLink (both Command line AND Windows) from Locosys
c) Firmware Update software (NAViFu.exe)
2. If you don't have WinRar, download WinRAR 3.70 or later, install it, and recover files from *.rar archives downloaded in step 1. If you downoaded the ZIP file above, you need to "unzip" the content.
3. Install both NaviLink programs and Firmware Update (NAViFU.exe) software.
4. Plug the Navi USB cable and connect the Navi/GT11 to it. Make sure that this connection will not be interrupted during the firmware update.
5. Turn on Navi/GT11. If your current firmware is 1024f or higher, as indicated by SETTINGS>VERSION you need to enter the UPDATE mode: SETTINGS>VERSION>UPDATE>YES
6. Exit all other Windows applications, finish printing etc. When Windows monster runs out of resources (for whatever reasons) it may interrupt the firmware upload, in which case you will need to send your Navi for service to revive it. A simple precaution of terminating other programs during firmware upgrade greatly increases the reliability of the process.
7. Run NAViFU.exe program and select the COM port from the pop-up menu.
8 . Select Browse in NAViFU program and choose the Navi_fw.s firmware file that you downloaded in step 1a and recovered in step 2.
9 . Choose "execute". Navi light should flash and progress bar should be displayed on PC.
10. After the execution is complete, power your Navi-GT11 down and up again. Go to Settings and select Version. You should see the Version Number corresponding to the name of the file in step 1a. Rename Navi_fw.s file to include the Version number. For example if you updated to 1115 rename the file to Navi_fw1115.s . This will help you to keep track of your updates."
