Lake George art exhibition
Something a little different this time.
Currently there is an exhibition at The Victorian Artists Society in Melbourne that showcases a collection of monotypes by my partner Marketa Kemp, who has been coming to windsurf Lake George with me for the past four years or so.
This exhibition titled 'LOVE YOU, GEORGE' is centred around the lake and its many different facets. On our trips over the past four years Marketa made numerous sketches and small plein-air paintings, which she then used as reference material for her monotypes.
"What on earth is a monotype" you ask?
I'm told that it is a painterly form of printmaking, where one paints with thick inks on a non-absorbent surface (like copper or perspex). The painted image is then transferred to paper by pressing the two together. The result is a unique, one-off impression.
It is an art form in its own right, although not very well known.
Clearly, when it comes to Lake George, we all are in it for the glassy water and the speed runs. But for her as an artist, it is the light, the rugged landscape and the abundant birdlife, which inspires her just as much. At the end of the day the wind disappears, the afternoon light sets in, and everything goes silent for a moment. We get our camp chairs out and open a bottle of wine.
The birds start slowly coming back in, landing on the water to reclaim the ownership of this rugged body of water.
It's a pretty cool sight.
If you are in Melbourne and would like to see the exhibition, it is on until Sunday 11 May (The Victorian Artists Society, 430 Albert st, East Melbourne).
