I'm new at the game ,but after realising my wave days are over ,eg..sore as a bitch .and creaky old bones .after sessions .crawling not walking some days .
last year tried my mates garmin speed watch ...did some good times ,but need my own gear ,I think .
he mentioned ,you have to use the corrected gear to have your speeds registered .
As a complete newbie .what gear do I need .to start registering .And get into my new category of windsurfing ,as I'm heading north again later this year ,and want to be set up ready to go .

The approved devices are:
Canmore : the cheapest, but less reliable and fewer features
Locosys GT-31: no longer in production
Locosys GW52: no longer in production , but more recent
Locosys GW-60: the watch, the latest and greatest
There are threads in this forum for each of the devices, if you have time you can read all the info, otherwise just buy one and ask your friends....

Most of the windsurfing shops/retailers have stocks of the GW60. Ring around in your area.

Surf Sail Australia have an online catalog.
Next thing to do is join a team. The team you are most likely to be sailing in with is best.
Or if you have some mates, start your own team.

Mandurah mob have team members all over Australia, so if you can't figure out a better alternative, mention us when you register.

(Sorry guys I'm turning into a Mineral clone in my old age)

For a small extra payment I suggest you get some software like GPSresults or Realspeed, they will help you to analyze your tracks, jibe width, split or stitch files, etc. In KA72 you only get the best number for each category.

At the moment (It's rumored that Mal may be updating it if he has time), realspeed doesn't handle the 5hz files all that well, especially for alphas, you're better off with GPSResults or GPSARPro

After a weekend of gusty choppy muck ...
Using sails of 8.5 and a 130 Titan .best 13-16 knots was 46 Kms ...
And on my 125 rocket 7.0 .13-18 knot .tops speed of 53-9 Kms or 29 knots .and choppy high tide ,
made me relies ,more wind is needed ,and flatter conditions .

Do most people run off the wind to get the high speeds ...

Your right decrepit ,Im getting obsessed .

The only way to go really fast, is going way off, in strong wind and flat water.
Hence the search for better speed spots all the time.

BUT . Did squeeze 57.02 km out of a 125 litre tabou .30.8 knots .
time to get serious register and begin the journey .
and wait for good wind .hope it's ok to go with you Mandurah mob
as invited by decrepit .
i know I'm miles away but do visit every year .

i know I can do better
I promise I won't let the team down

Certainly OK with the Mandurah Mob, but I am getting flak from other teams, for spreading out all over Aus.
So yes, if there is no team close to you. (where are you by the way?) and you don't sail with any other team, I'll accept your application.

Well the ideal situation is to form a Norfolk Island team, but you need at least one other sailor to do that.
Not sure what the rules are about Norfolk Island, are you an Australian citizen, or classed as an Australian resident?
If so we have no problems.
There doesn't seem to be anything in the rules about mingling nationalities in teams, but I have feeling it would be frowned on, I have enough trouble with interstate.

I'd need to get the opinion of the advisory panel.

Great Tardy.
We've found being in a team and sailing together really brings the sailing community closer.

Good luck with that.

Tardy, the Cap'n listens to every word we say and vice versa. We carefully file his words of wisdom in the short term memory file, and..... damn, I have forgotten what I was going to say.

Hi Tardy, is Dean Burrell still living over there. I used to windsurf with him in Tauranga NZ. If he still sails you will probably know him. If so say hi for me.
I joined the mob a few months ago, good bunch of people. See you when you come for a visit.

"and flatter conditions"? There is one or two lobbying for an open ocean category. Judging by your drone video on the other thread, you'd be up for that? I reckon 27 knots feels very fast in open ocean.
