If you have the Genie version of the firmware ending in 'T' it is really simple. Go to the MISC menu. Press the toggle and scroll down to the DELETE menu item. Press again and select DELETE ALL. This will reset you Genie and clear the internal memory SBP file.
Its a good idea to do the SAVE ALL item at the end of your session as well or before you do the DELETE ALL.
The SAVE ALL will save your internal SBP file to the SD card but will also make a text document containing your speed genie 2 second and 10 second speeds. (.SPD). To access it, open the file from your SD card in the computer in "notepad" or equivalent text editor.
If you don't have the Genie 'T' version, you will need to reset the max speed and max 10 sec in the speed menu individually.
In "Speed", if you press the joystick when "Max Speed" is showing you get a list to choose from. "delete" is out of site, you have to scroll to it, 1 move up or several down will highlight it, just press the joystick again and it's gone. In "tracks" it's not as complicated, but there's more stuff, distance, time and average speed are there as well.

Not sure I have the GenieT.
Ok. Did all that .They still show up on the card I suppose the test will be when I wear it again to see if the max historical speed comes up..I have set the alarm to go off when I near that. I was surprised that I can actually hear the alarm when I'm sailing with a helmet on!
I thought it would be useless..

If you have those items in the MISC menu, then you have the T firmware version. You can see the version of the firmware in the SETTINGS menu by scrolling through. You can also see the firmware version listed in the analysis software and their printouts (RealSpeed, GPS-Results and GPSAR Pro).
What do you mean by "they still show up on the card"?

When I open the GPS on my computer the files are still all showing but I suppose that's on the card. When I get a chance I might wander around with the GPS on and see if it shows the old history..
I assume notepad is a program? I don't think I have it.
My .SPD file definitely does not look like that ![]()
Stu I think you're thinking of an SBP file that's the data file you get when you save to card
Well here's Sue's .SDD file from the data she sent me, I've never seen a .SPD file before.
Unfortunately Sue doesn't see her file extensions.
Sue, If you're running windows then you should have Notepad. It's normally in "accessories" If you open that and point it to the "Saved to card" files it will open this one.
Interesting it has the time but not the date.

Yep, that clears speed genie, to clear it in tracks you have to do that separately, same with the data logger. If you want to clear the card that's best done from the computer.

Previously I've gone in to the GPS folder on the computer and deleted everything ..It worked but it didn't clear the histroy max speed..I think what everyone has told me here has worked thanks..I'll wait until I get a bit more time and then suss it out and make sure..

Told you my figures didn't look like yours Sailquick..![]()
![]()
Hey Sue, all you need to get it to look like mine is a really windy day, some flat water and a serious disregard for you own health!
If by 'seeing it on your computer' you mean looking at the SD card after it has been inserted in you computer, then that is correct. The 'clear all' menu item just clears what is in the GT-31's own memory (Data logger and Genie).
You probably don't want or need to clear the files off your SD card, even if you have copied them to your computer. The SD card can easily hold many years of saved files, especially if it is the max size of 2GB. It can be useful to have a backup copy on the card. I just checked one of my GPS cards and it has over two years of session files on it that only fill 105MB of space leaving 1.76GB free! I recon I am right on that card for space for about another 15 years!
This is what you get on the SD card when you use the SAVE ALL function in the MISC menu:
The SBN fie is already there as it written to the card in real time. (Note that a new .SBN file is created each time the GPS is turned on)
The SBP file is the file saved from the internal memory, often called the 'Data Logger'. This is a 'circular' type of file. It will continue from where it left off before each time the GPS is turned on, but when the memory is full it will just start to overwrite the earliest part of the file. To me, the big advantage of the 'DELETE ALL' is that it clears the internal data logger memory. This means that the next time you sail you will have only that session in the data logger (SBP) file. The advantage of saving this file is that it is considerably smaller than the .SBN file so it can be uploaded or sent by email much faster. It also has the advantage that if you turn your GPS off during the day and then turn it on to sail again, there will only be one file for the day (if you cleared the memory before you started), whereas there will be two .SBN files that may have to be joined to analyze a days session
The .SPD file is the contents saved from the Genie (Text file)
The.BIN is.........something...... that is not useful to us as far as I know. No need to copy and save it on your computer.
Hope this helps.
Hey Sue, all you need to get it to look like mine is a really windy day, some flat water and a serious disregard for you own health!![]()
I might reach 28kts if I tried that..![]()
I haven't been saving it all to the card after sailing..Ok so it would be nice to be familiar with the data logger , miscel and speed areas in the menu..So I don't really need to delete dats off the card from my computer..I'll keep that in mind.Thanks..
Hi Sue,
I don't know if this has been covered before but here's my basic tips:
Number 1) The only file you need 95% of the time is the .SBN file. It contains your track. If your GPS is set up right, you should get a blank one of these created every time you switch the GPS on, and it will be filled up with data every time you switch the GPS off. (If your GPS switches off some other way than normal, or if you remove the SD card without switching the GPS off first, you can wind up with an empty .SBN file.)
Number 2) The .SBP file is a secondary copy of the same information recorded into a different place. You don't need this file unless something goes wrong with the .SBN file. IF YOUR GPS IS SET UP RIGHT you should not see these files, but you can use the GPS to create one from the data logger menu.
Normal reasons why you might want to use the SBP file:
1) You forgot to put the SD card into the GPS before going sailing.
2) You took the SD card out of the GPS before switching it off, so the SBN file is empty.
3) You accidentally locked your SD card when putting it into the GPS (the little switch on the side of the card does this) which means the SBN file could not be written to the card.
4) You had multiple sessions on one day and want to combine them. Creating a SBP file can join together the data in multiple SBN files easily for you.
5) Your GPS crashed or hung or otherwise died, so you didn't end up with an SBN file on your card.
The SBN and SBP files should normally contain the same information, but they CAN be set up to work differently. IF YOUR GPS IS SET UP RIGHT you should use the same settings for both types of files.
Many sailors religiously create SBP files and clear the memory of their GPS every time they sail. There is no reason to do this if your GPS is set up right. It's just one of those things, like taking off your shoes to get onto a plane, that people do to give themselves the illusion that they are safer.
Dylan.
So Sue, have you been able to set your computer up to show file extension????
It's no good us all talking about .sbn and .sbp if you can't tell one from the other.
If you haven't I'm sure if you tell us what version of windows you're running, somebody will be able to tell you exactly how to do it.

Hey Dylan! That IS me!
![]()
But it's not just an illusion. It has saved me more than a couple of times when my SBN file has either failed to write, suddenly stopped writing mid session or been corrupted.
I also always sail with no less than THREE GPS's! Just in case the above does not work!![]()
Even that is not infallible though. On my 'would've been a' world record 1hr session last year, two of my three GPS's failed to record the first 15 minutes of the record. Bugger! No chance to claim the official record.
The good news was that the third one did get the whole session! ![]()
Thanks. It worked only had the current sessions details..So I suppose I better clear it now before the next.
I do get the file extensions..
