Three hardy old salts confirmed including me for what looks like an epic afternoon speed session at the Pit tomorrow.

If you can drive down, jump a plane or get a chopper with Bronwyn spare no expense!

Tides are perfect and the wind looks like 30-35knots WSW at around 5-6pm. Due to tides access may be difficult before 2pm. See you there!

I wish Daffy was here for the best conditions in years. I haven't seen this much concentrated pressure since 2009. At the moment it's just me and Peter Johnston. Kato has been called into help in the SA fires!

It's going to be crazy.

If you're thinking of flying in note that tomorrow will also be 25+ so it should be well worth it!

Instead of being stuck in Kalgoorlie with no water in sight, I could have just stayed home....

Here's something to cheer you up mate! It's sure to appeal to your predicament!

Blowing its arse off in Balnarring Beach and just lost power. 25-30 at the Yanakie station so probably 35 on the inlet already. Heading off at noon...

Skunked for the umpteenth time! I arrived at 2:30 thinking this would be the perfect time and tide running well out to find it still right in - a full two hours after the high.

Dr Cam was there packing up after a morning session. No one knew he was here! Sounds like he had a decent sail but ON HIS OWN!

After half an hour the water slid out enough and I drove in. No sooner had Cam left that Pete Johnston arrived, my only partner in crime and we got rigging while watching 30-35knots WSW fade into 10-15knots out of Pete's arse. No kidding, as we got the wetsuits on it just went from 30knots WSW to 10 NW. All this while the forecasts are saying solid 30-35 WSW.

Stood around chatting for an hour with Andrew from Invy, who had arrived and keen as mustard. Finally, whatever the hiatus was passed and the wind filled back in 20-25 but westerly. Got some runs in around 40-41.5 knots and then decided to call it a day at 7pm as the wind edged around WSW and 30 knots. Haven't we all seen this before! I mean why doesn't it just edge around at 10 in the freaking morning!

There. All better now that I've vented.

Great to catch up with Pete and Dr Cam but I reckon I would have had more fun standing around a smoking BBQ in 40 degrees with some of Pete's partner Larissa's home made brews eating cumquat muffins and vegan cheese.

Quite happy to talk up a 30-35 knot WSW forecast for Sandy Point anyday!

What if it was as forecast and we'd missed the only spring front this year? Would you stay quiet? LOL

Yep, sounds epic.........

still, after reading the dribble its hard not to feel sorry for pete and his wife

Will a moderator please get rid of this wanker troll please. It's a crime against humanity to see someone getting so angry about something so fun.

Oh and Pete is not married you dick head.

Ado-was great to catch up all being briefly & Peter J-thanks for stopping on the Sandy Inlet road & sharing your incredible muffins.!!

I love sailing Sandy Point & have been visiting since my kids were tiny tots ~ 20yrs but am yet to come away feeling satisfied -it's a tough gig & there are heaps of variables that need to line up for things to work . Now things are even more challenging as the dunes grow/become covered in green symbolising a sense of permanence.

I came away with the feeling that a fleet of ECO-Friendly bulldozers/graders are needed -perhaps under the watchful eye of Sophie Routaboul ( Luderitz speed )to flatten out the offending dunes . Of course she would negotiate in her lovely French accent with the local Environmental lobby to ensure sustainability /minimal environmental impact .

Tried various angles of attack to the run Thursday including swimming the rig into the channel ,floating in the outgoing current until clear of the main dunes but always the same problem-fickle /dirty air as you got close to the bank .

The gusts in the morning session were at times approaching 40 knots with one gust turning the entire inlet into a swirling mass of sand /frothing-white capping water. It was phenomenal to watch & one of the Big Boys of the sport probably would have managed a 47+ knot run had they been in position at the right moment .( I was swimming for my rig in he channel after the fin let go in ~ 80cms of chop & things went spectacularly bad ).

For me the ideal Sandy Point would include 1.Flattened Dunes 2.Drinks/Rest shelter at the end of the run 3.A Gondola set up that runs you back to the start point 4.Wind data streaming from a Beacon ~ 2-3 kms WSW of the Speed Run so you could anticipate the next big gust .

Next Time...!!!!

Who are you wise man of science

Probably time for a WA trip on a good forecast Cam, forget the big numbers, just enjoyable sailing, and I'll set you up in the best alpha spots so you can take me to the cleaners

Ah, if only Taylor's frozen eddy hypothesis wasn't just that

I think the best science can do at predicting the next big gust is still that famous poem by Lewis F. Richardson

"Big whorls have little whorls that feed on their velocity, and little whorls have lesser whorls and so on to viscosity"

Lovely prose.

I just look at the cumulus/cumulonimbus clouds and that's usually 90% right for a wind increase. If it's a ridging high pressure gradient wind in summer it's usually sunny, warm and consistent and no one cares about PB's or getting the gust because there aren't any! On the epic days the clouds usually suffice to anticipate forthcoming wind.

One thing is for certain, if things continue as they are those dunes will be the end of Sandy Point speed sailing one day.

Hardie perhaps I do need to make an extended trip to WA. Is February still good for wind or is December better?

DEc Jan best winds, but Feb can be very good, Albany and Esperence can be great in Feb?
