Canmore devices are no longer acceptable but anyone wanting to join in the GPSTC group/team can't because no accepted devices are actually available. Some of my team have been reminded that canmores are no longer acceptable but what can they do if the approved devices cannot be purchased? A lot of peeps might be leaving the group because of unavailability of devices. is there a solution?

The drums, I can hear them, like the intro to Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk"! Followed by the sound of the launching of cruise missiles during "Desert Storm".

well Julien's ramped up production of the mini motion and the gw60 is still available. Not ideal I know, but it is possible.
And I heard on the grape vine, that if an order was in for mini motion, the canmore would be allowed until the motion arrived.

Facts:
1. Motion Loggers ARE available and around 200 have been made and sold.
At least 45 are currently en-route to Australia
More have been ordered in each state as I understand it.
They cost not much more ($160) than the Canmore and are infinitely better. That is significantly less, in real terms, than the GT-31's were when they are in production (and were the ONLY choice), many of which which are still in good use

2. The GW-60 IS still available, (even if you dont like it. - Many prople are still getting good service from them).

3. Because of the success of the Motion Logger, there have been a few older model GT-31's and GW-52's for sale from sailors who have got the new Motion Mini.

4. I am told by the GPSTC group that those sailors who have orderd and are still waiting for Motion Logger deliveries, or a new GW-60, will be allowed to continue to post with their Canmore, conditionally, until they recieve their fully approved device.

5. The Canmore was approved for use during and emergency situation a few years ago when there was NO approved GPS available new, as a stop gap measure. It was NEVER considered to be anything like an ideal situation or anything but a short term solution.

6. The phasing out of the Canmore was scheduled to happen for 2020 and this was also widely advertised. The timeline has been extended for over a year due to early shortages of the Motion, due to Covid and parts supply issues which impacted on their manufacture and delivery.

7. The LCD screen Motion is not currently available and may not be for quite some time.

8. It was widely reported here many months ago, how the Motion Loggers could be ordered in group-buy batches of at least 5 units and many team captains and other interested persons ordered them for their teams and for new members.

Perhaps someone could clarify (as I don't know) what is/was wrong with the Canmore?

When I started sailing that was the only unit that appeared to be available and that wasn't cheap either. We are all amateurs right.
There is no prize money just positions.

I am not and will not be in a position to keep updating things just because..

I have a Sunto watch which has a GPS on it, can I use that to upload to GPSTC??

Perhaps GPSTC is in cahoots which the owners of the new devices or is that a conspiracy theory.

My Canmore works fine, is it time to leave GPSTC?

Just Google it DrewHen, then cancel your dinner plans. You won't have time

My GW60 stopped functioning in early 2020. I still had my GT31, however I wanted a backup device. I posted on our SEQ windsurfing Facebook group that I was placing an order for a motion Mini logger and asked if anyone was anyone interested in joining the order. I had multiple requests to join in. In the end I ordered, received and delivered 17 loggers to 16 sailors. At least one of the sailors was replacing his canmore. I know of at least 10 others from different teams who have placed orders and received multiple motion loggers over the last year.

Like it or not the GPSTC requires a high standard of accuracy and the ability to check that accuracy. The canmore has 2 problems, it doesn't record any accuracy data and it's got a habit of missing the odd point.
No you can't use your Sunto for posting, that also doesn't record accuracy data.

There is no collusion in this, it can easily be demonstrated that the approved devices record an accuracy check, and full doppler data. Where as we haven't come across any other devices that do so.

So no more Canmore...Would this include Burrum speedsailing event?
If so can someone please advise me on obtaining a Motion LCD. If that's not available a Mini Motion. Can they be used with Samsung S20?

I usually have at least one spare GPS to loan out if someone needs one for Burrum this year...

Burrum Windfest score results via KA72,
It does not use GPSTC
So you will be fine

The philosophy of the Challenge:Inclusiveness: That everyone in the windsurfing community be included from fun and social sailors, to the serious including Pro's. Participation: That it is important to participate, to be involved, to develop skills and improve Personal Best Times. Be involved all season, not just summer. Fun: That most importantly we have fun, and however you get it, from stacking it on a 15 knot run, to doing 40+ knots, or just having a beer/bourbon/wine with your friends after a session. Building relationships: That we connect people with the same passion, meet new people, create connections intra, inter-state, international and generally just build relationships and grow our community.More generally, Windsurfing at speed is also about getting fit, developing skills and technique, we can all learn how to windsurf better, and some elements of GPS mean you want to sail more in order to give yourself a better chance of performing better, so more time on water has multiple benefits.

I wish they would find the keys to the GT31 factory, switch on the lights, dust off the machines, and start production again. How hard could it be?

Don't worry about not being able to use a Suunto. My Suunto Ambit3 always gives me lower figures than the GW60 if I wear them both at the same time.

It's really not for guys that at every chance have a go at those organising the competition though is it? Therefore it's really not for you and it's time to move on with your life.

GPSTC shows rankings so far this year of around 20 sailors within a knot of each other. It would be good if the devices had accuracy that reflected that.

I got one of the first batch of Motion Loggers to arrive in the country. Have over 50 sessions logged by it... NOT ONE ISSUE. (Except when I forgot to turn it off until I got home. ) Only 1-2min to download to phone, export file to KA72, then on to GPSTC.
Charge it for 2hrs after about 10hrs of use (2-3 sessions).
As one of the original GPSTC participants (2007) and having had- a Garmin Foretrex 101, GT-11, couple of GT-31s, Canmore and GW60, I believe the Motion Logger is the easiest to use, most reliable, most accurate and best value for money, rule-abiding device that I have used. Cannot fault it... I just use a Garmin watch for on water feedback of how slow I am compared to my mates. Fully recommend it.
...and no, not a paid advertisement.
