Hello,
Just new to the forum and hope to sail faster with some of this great input. Cheers.

I've recently bought a Garmin 101 wrist GPS and am going to try it out on the sailboard shortly, I'm wondering if I need some sort of extra protection for the unit before I catapult it into the drink? I read in one thread that they may be suspect when it come to watertightness. Any thoughts thanks.

Hi Sailpilot,

Get yourself one of these:
aquapac.net/

In a crash, water can get into the most 'watertight' of places

You will also want to set up the track logging to be every 2 seconds so that you can join the rest of us uploading your track data to gps-speedsurfing.com!

If you wanna wear it as a wrist watch, you need to use vaseline around all the vulnerable spots, they're not really waterproof. Most of us wear aquapacks, around our biceps.

Thanks Guys,

Will try out the aqua pac, don't know about the uploading bit as I haven't tried getting one out of the unit. I assume there's some usb cord you can get for the computer? If so where do you get one?

Are you guys using the Armpac? It seems to be black plastic, not transparent, in the website photo.

The Navi is supposed to be the most accurate for it's price. It will take an SD card so you can record lots of data before you have to download.
But in an aquapac it's not as easy to operate as the garmin

Tom has just upgraded the Navi software to do an auto reset. No more pushing buttons. All the info is at GPSSS under Speed Genie. Could be just what we,ve been looking for.

Wormy, the Navi is a gps unit from Locosys of Taiwan. "NaviGPS" was a brand name of a company that sold the Locosys unit. They folded so Locosys started marketing the same unit itself calling it "GT-11" and it's bluetooth cousin the "BGT-11". The same unit is sold in Europe branded as "Amaryllo Trip Tracker" by Amaryllo,a gps oriented company based in Holland. But while the units are now sold as GT-11 many continue to call it by it's previous catchy name, "Navi". It has nothing to do with Navman or it's discontinued Navman M300.

The Locosys guys have been REALLY flexible about marketing the unit and have, in conjunction with a bunch of speedsailing boffins, rewritten the software several times to match pretty much what us speedsailing guys have ever wanted in a gps data logger.

Basically it is much better than the Garmin 101/201 and is half the price.

Cheapest place to get them is from Tom Chalko who is doing some of the software changes. You can contact him direct at his mtbest.net site

I've just looked at the gpsss site, they say that at the moment the navi
is the only unit that measures doppler, so for record attempts it's the only one acceptable. Here's what they say about it.

quote:

Some features of Navi GT11 / Amaryllo Triptracker:

* High accuracy GPS-Doppler speed measurement. 5*10 second average speed accurate to within 0.02 knots (95% confidence)
* 10 second max average speed displayed on screen with support for multiple speed attempts (with firmware 0727a and above)
* Automatic GPS data identification, including sailor''s name and the serial number of the GPS used
* Advanced Data Logger functions with ON-FIX and ON-SPEED recording
* TWO independent data loggers (SD card and Data Logger flash memory) for maximum reliability
* Support for SD card up to 2GB (small cards work fine and save battery power)
* Fast GPS data transfer and backup to SD card and external computers
* Store multiple tracks (surfing days) on the SD card (nice for on holiday).
* Re-charging capability in a car on a beach.
