My good mate Herb's new GT31 is playing up
He can't turn it off or toggle any of the menu's, any ideas or is it U/S and back to the shop
He'll no doubt read here tomorow and I'll have a look tomorrow night after work to see if anyone has any ideas, poor bugger's not happy.

Good night

My GT11 bombed out if i went onto speed genie before it located the sats. Either disconnect the battery or leave it until the battery runs out. both are a pain in the arse and i'm disappointed this has happened to the new version. Whatever the problems with the garmin at least it was reliable if kept dry.

Had the same thing happen to my gt 11. Removed the battery, and everything was sweet from then on. I believe the GT 31 has a reset switch inside that you may be able to reset. Where did he get it from? If it was simon at BC then call him - he's open from 9-2 on sat. But be quick, he is going away for 2 weeks this thursday.

yeah as FirieBob has said my GT-31 has frozen up….It is just sitting here with yesterdays Max Speed displayed together with the usual Icons. Pressing either the Toggle or the On/off button does nothing. Connecting to USB does nothing.
Eventually I removed SD card . It shows a .sbn file which is empty.

yeah, I bought it from Simon at BC and will give him a ring after 9am this morning.

I will keep everyone posted.

Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my garmin gps - it doesn't read 50 knots like Chris Lockwoods and Martin Van Meurs. I am staying with the garmin's until it stops working all together.

Cheers,

Carl

Bloody hell!!
My GT 31 has done the freeze too.
Can't turn off, can't toggle, took ther card out though.
Managed to retrieve the track from today's grovell via Microsoft checkdisk.
It was an empty file when I got it off the card!
What to do?
I've heard let the battery go flat then recharge?
Advice welcomed
thanks

Buy another one and use both. They are like sheep. They know when they are alone and they don't like it.

This seems to be a problem with the chipset, the Sirf 3, rather than the unit. I have had it happen on three different makes of GPS all using the Sirf 3. It tends to happen before the gps has acquired a sat fix and the unit freezes up while you are trying to scroll through the menu. Most times the only way to recover is wait for the battery to drain or disconnect it and then try again. It doesn't seem to harm the unit but is very annoying.

I have to report that I sent mine back to Board Crazy where I purchased and Simon replaced it.
The new one is working just fine.
Even with the first one I always gave it plenty of time to get a fix on sats.

Anyway I would like to acknowledge that Board Crazy did the right thing by me.

So Herb just for clarification, did you let the battery go flat and retry it??

24 hours on and still no change - battery icon still full but I suppose that is frozen tool!
Thanks for the feedback Roo - not sure what that means for me and all the other GT 31 owners.
Daffy - Sheep - what the!
The "freeze" happened 1:45 into a 2:00 hour session. There was no sat fix issue at all. The unit stopped writing to card when it froze - this is what drew my attention to the problem - the card writing icon froze!
Managed to extract the track to the point of freeze - all good - no anomalies to that point!

Said this last season, when Board Crazy backed me up with a fault in GT-11 screen display, they replaced it real fast with a new GT-11 under warranty.
Next time I am needing a new GPS, regardless of them being on East Coast and me here in WA. They get my business every time

So, is it still working Pete?

I read this on a battery site....

Li-ion batteries with fuel gauge should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. Running the battery down in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate and in some cases cut off the device prematurely.

Though in your case it was the opposite..it wouldn't turn off...

Maybe it thought it was such a crap day at PW that it wasn't worth recording :-))

Decrepit asked..So Herb just for clarification, did you let the battery go flat and retry it??

After a couple of days the display went off...I assumed the battery was flat. I tried the reset switch. At this time Simon asked me to send it to him which I did. I can't remember recharging it...maybe if I had of it may have be right again.

Thanks Herb, and congrats on your award!

Be interesting to see how 25's goes now, if it's a once off, or if it keeps happening.

Happy to report that after a full battery discharge / recharge it booted up fine and a 45 minute dashboard test seems to indicate that all is in order.
Not really confidence inspiring stuff though!
