Hi all, ive sort of asked this question before however ive been out of action for a while and cant seem to find the old threed so ill ask again (sorry to do this to you guys) I have a track saved on my garmin foretrex 201 and ive lost the manual. The questions are as follows;
1. How do i save the track from my GPS to my PC, (i have tried) also i have a USB to 9 port serial conection which conects my GPS to my pc and i loaded the softwear before conecting the GPS.
2.When i have my GPS conected to my pc and click on my computer why cant i see this device conected (like i would see my flash drive conected).
3. If and when "we" resolve this problem how could i overlay the saved info onto google earth like ive seen in these forums.
Any advice would be a great help king regards Steve O

Or go to the search facility on this forum and enter foretrex in the last year and you should get a few relevant threadds without starting another one. If you still get stuck let us know how far you've gotten.
Thanks heaps... the info was all good...took me a little while to work it out however its working now... used GPS visualizer to plact the track on the map is there any other map sites that are better for example i like to place the info onto a topo map
Sorry for being so gumby with this stuff ...but how do i save it as gpx ...ive save it by using easy gps ...however it doesent look as good as your stuff that you have posted the tracks are all dead stright and stuff... steve o
Steve o when you open the file in RSpeed, and then hit save as, save it as blah blah blah dot GPX. It will look like this if you use the date you recorded it.
240508.gpx being 24th May 2008 as a sample.
Open Google Earth plus, tab "file" open and then in the file type, tab down and select Gps (*.gpx.*loc) and then in the box above file type tab the directory you saved the file in, high light the file and it will show in Google.
Mineral 1, thanks for replying i have been trying to follow your instructions however im a little computer sad... forgive me... what is rspeed is this a gps site...because i have alredy saved the track and using gps visulizer had the track desplaid on google maps... but the tracks look fake as they are stright and clunky no like the posts that ive seen in the phots section regards Steve O
"RealSpeed" is a great Aussie, program for analysing your gps results, but there is a small registration fee to pay.
gpsar is a free european program that will also save your files as .gpx.
I know nothing about gps visulizer, see if you can save the file as .gpx or .kml Googleearth will import either of those.
Hi Stevo,
The problem is probably the way that the garmin is saving data internally. To save space, it defaults to a setting where it only saves a data point if you change direction or speed. This would give you the clunky tracks you're talking about.
You need to go into the settings on your garmin, and tell it to save a point every 2 seconds, regardless of whether you've changed direction or not.
I don't know where this menu option is located, but I'm sure you'll figure it out with a bit of googling.
Yep nebs is right the recording interval needs to be setup for 2 sec.
Goto Main Menu
Then Tracks
Then Record Interval
Here you could use Distance Time or Auto. Use Time
Adjust to 2
Ensure Recording is turned on before heading out and reset max speed before session.
Your Easy GPS program is able to save the track as a .gpx file, though I can't remember ofhand how to.
