Hey guys.

I do a fair amount of windsurfing/sailing, and was looking to get a GPS for recording speed.

Its more of a fun thing, and was looking to get something quite cheap that just does the job.

Any suggestions on a model or make?
Has anyone used the Navman M300?

Cheers,

James

1) Get a Locosys Navi-GT31
2) Get a Locosys Navi-GT31

or

3) Get a Locosys Navi-GT31

If you are on an absolute budget, not that any of the above options are really that expensive, the Garmin models that are deemed (just) suitable for windsurfing are Garmin Foretrex Series
Garmin Gecko Series
Garmin Edge (1 second setting)
Garmin Legend Cx (1 second setting).

Basically, you are going to want to find something with a Sirf III chipset, and that is capable of sampling once every second or two, otherwise you won't get a reasonable speed reading, even for "fun."

Here's a brief (and not overly complimentary) review of the Navman:

And just in case you missed it.
get a NAVi GT31

Then email Hardie to sign up with a team over there. He will find you a team in NSW, if you dont have one. You wont regret it Best fun ever.

Oh did I say it cost zilch to sign up, it cost zilch

Really depends on how seriously you want to use the GPS for sailing. I have a Garmin eTrex for general bushwalking etc. They are cheap now (maybe $130 - haven't looked at prices for a while). The eTrex WILL show your max. speed and distance travelled, and that might be all the functionality you're looking for.

But, if you want it for sailing primarily, I think most would recommend a Navi. which is a bit more technical to set up (plenty of help here), but once going OK, is the bees knees.

Ok. I think its been drummed into me enough... Haha. Think the Navi is the way to go...

Has anyone done shopping around, and know where the cheapest place to purchase them from?

Simon at Boards Crazy will look after you. I am in the West and he did a great deal for me a year back on the original GT-11 with full ready to go kit, GT-11, card and card ready, along with Aquapac. All I had to do was load software, set parameters, and it was up and running

Hi Wardo. i case you were wondering again and had noticed that there were few people replying here is my advice: Get a Navi GT31.
Bit repetitive I know but that is what I think is the way to go

A lot of windsurfing shops sell GT-31s. We got one from Simon at Board Crazy, but it's not your only option.

This site:
www.locosystech.com/en/product/Previous-Generations/locosys-previous-generations.html

lists worldwide distributors for the GPS, including ten in Australia.

Prices fluctuate according to the exchange rate. We once bought a GT-11 online from the UK from storagedepot (www.storagedepot.co.uk) and they did a deal with an aquapac for about 100 pounds. Was good value at the time. Their current bundle price is about 120 pounds, but you could probably get a better deal from one of the Australian distributors with the exchange rate where it is now.

Nice tape-job!

Do you have any tracks for ka72.com? I'd love to get some land-sailers there too.

Does the GT31 do "speed made good"?
IE the speed you are aproching an object even though you are not going directly for it. as against acvtual speed over ground/water.

Yep, in the navigation pages you can get a VMG toward a waypoint.

I will buy a GT31 when they make it half the size and weight.

Well, I carry a GT-31 on my arm and a Garmin on my mast where I can read it.
The GT-31 is by far the lightest and according to RealSpeed it is the most accurate.
