OK Guyz help needed.

On my last trip back from the eastern states recently, I nearly had an accident after a long days driving, and thought I nearly lost my life here, this is madness, I need to start flying again!!

So which are the airlines? Cost of excess baggage? How does it all work? Car/Van Hire at Airports? Hints/Tips? Experiences?

Qantas seem to be the cheapest these days. $20 a piece for each extra bag, and you can book up to 5 extra pieces before going to the airport.

At the airport, you can book extra pieces, but they are more expensive. I think there is also a maximum of 9 pieces in total, which is a lot.

Each piece is up to 23kgs, or you get to pay an oversized fee (for up to 32kg).

I haven't looked at the VirginAustralia prices lately, but they were more expensive and got progressively more expensive the more pieces you bought.

I couldn't find a van hire place at the airport in Perth, but maybe a wagon? I think Northside rentals advertise an airport pickup/dropoff, so maybe you can use them to drop the van off?

Hardz I haven't flown with gear for a couple of years, from Cairns to Perth Virgin were the go but they were long diverted flights. My last trip (things might have changed) the big roo was the go as FN said above. At the time Qantas allowed one 23kg bag in price and I just paid for another, so one board bag and one sail bag with other stuff shared between the two, jocks and socks in cabin bag.

If this is for a Burrum trip, just put the word out and I bet someone will pick you up, no need for a car at Burrum. Some of our mob might have a house there, if we do there'll be a corner for you

Hi Hardie,
Here are my tips if you are considering a trip to Burrum Heads.

Qantas. Perth-Bris 0035-0700 = 4.30hrs $275
Bris-Hervey Bay 0815-0905 = 50mins $79

H.B.- Bris 1035-1115 = 40mins $79
Bris-Perth 1515-1840 = 5.25hrs $279

The above sample was depart Perth 8th March and return 16th.

On arrival at Hervey Bay airport you will be met by a youngish hostess (40-70) who will drive you and gear to Burrum. As Firie said, no need for car, (pushbike provided) and there will be a room for you.

Forget about the forecast, just book now for the cheap fares and enjoy.

The above applies to all from W.A.

Virgin is $30 extra for one additional bag prepaid but check the type of aircraft and make sure the length limitation is not exceeded. Jets star swapped aircraft on us coming back from Maui so we had to sweet talk our way onto a different flight!

Out of left field suggestion/question:

Does the rail link WA to SA cater for drive on, drive off for cars and trailers? Cost?

Would save a LOT of driving!

OK, I looked up the train fares and they are absolutely outrages !
Forget that idea. I don't know how they even get anyone to use their service?

I think there must be a lot of cashed up old people that want to take their cars. I think it would be cheaper to send the car on a transporter and fly over, but that's not cheap either.

Not so ridiculous if you like train travel, and yes, saves a lot of driving.
Took my SUV on the train (Per - Adel) a few years back and it only cost $100 because my parents were travelling gold class and I booked it on in their name. Don't know if trailers are catered for. You certainly can't have anything on a roof rack, but you can pack a lot IN the car, because you are in the train, not the car.
