Have noted a lot of hype about getting the fastest equipment......

Note of caution, the serious speedsters already have got the right gear for themselves, Note THEMSELVES

This is for the mere mortals!

Each of you needs to ask himself/herself a very important question. What do I want to get out of this. If it's the ultimate top GPS speeds, then dedicated boards have the potential to get you there. However, do you have the ability to get the potential out of the board. Or do you want to be involved have fun, learn how to sail faster and build relationships.

EG

Let's Talk JP's, just coz I've had some experience testing their new boards.

If the JP slalom has a potential top speed of 40 knots, but your ability when you've got used to it is only 85% on that board, then you might crack 34 knots. Which is fn fast. Whereas the top speed of an JP Excite Ride is say 36knots, but you can sail to 100% of it's potential..... then you will be faster on that.

Then think of this if you were 90% on the JP Slaom and could do 36 knots and 100% on the excite ride and do 36knots, and feel like you've had a nervous breakdown and not enjoyed the ride on the jp slalom, but enjoyed a huge thrill on the jp Xcite ride, and really enjoyed the ride, then what board leaves you better off.

So....... Don't get too caught up in the top end speed of things, remember this is what helped kill windsurfing in the late 90's.

You will learn more and sail faster on gear that is suited to you or just 1 level above you, rather than 5 levels above you, you may actually go slower!!!!

Hardie thanks for the reality check, well put, and a top call
Its the bragging rights and challenge between you and your mates.
The guns will scream off into the distance, but compete against their gun mates. Mere mortals will check off against other mere mortals
An Mineral will be competing against Mineral, cos nobody could be a bigger dill then me getting up to speed. Still not sure if the human body can go faster than 15knots

MMmmmm... I suppose there's not much point upgrading equipment for the "Challenge" until one can challenge one's equipment limit.

what if the upgrade involves a hack saw and a bucket of glass and resin?

As long as the board isn't worth much all you're loosing is sweat & tears. And possibly gaining lots of experience.
Mandurah mobs secret weapon is slowly coming on, I've stuck some 3mm herex on the rear bottom to convert the freeride rocker to speedboard.

This guy is good, you should see his work, it's one hot speed rocker now, I'm gonna have to find new excuses why I'm so slow

The mix we use is :- angle grinder, carbon, resin , no paint.
RRD is now Reverse, Reverse, Dismount.
Dismount is short for non-technical dismount.
It's now a (Roberto Grandi Kahunas. reqd.)

Kato KNOWS! Lots of resin and lots of paint!

Something worked though, 'cause that old dunger sure does slip along pretty nice now!

Hmmm... a dedicated speed board... now I've got no hope of gybing

The good thing is we are on the same team so all extra speed is an advantage

Don't forget you don't need to get the latest and greatest speed weapon, you can pickup a carbon slalom board under 10years old for around $400 which will still go like the clappers.

My board is an old Windtech Prolite900 of indeterminate years with square rails (yes square) front to back.

Regarding gybing

The good thing about the old gear is you have to be spot on with your technique to gybe else it will spit you of rather unceremoniously.

It is from Speed sailing with my Winny which has taught me how to gybe more consistantly.

Correctamundo, I do own a F2 SX med, but that is what I use more for the mid strength winds and also distance sailing Nm and 1 hour or if it's quite choppy.
It's a awesome board but a bit large for the next step up the speed ladder which is what I'm targeting.

The Windtech is needle-like and goes quick in a straight line on flattish water but does like chop or turning rapidly (or slowly for that matter).
The Box rails make it very tricky in chop as they tend to grab badly, after a number of bad dismounts I actually sanded 5mm chamfers from the front of the board to just in front of the front foot strap to soften the rail a bit.
Hardies Run has made this board a viable option again.
Hardy gave me this one as he didn't like the rails, it cost him $200 with a couple of sails and a mast.

The other board which I use is the Mistral Flow 276 which you used, this is actually classed as a "free ride" board and although it is not actually a race board it is still surprisingly quick (36knots on GPS).
The board has speed from a good shape but also it is a comfortable board to ride whilst you are doing it.
It is because of the comfort that this board is deceptive on a not so nice day and is always surprising to see what speeds I've done. This board set me back around $450 I also use it for light wind wave sailing.

I have on old speed slalom board ~ 10 yearsold that is certainly capable of these speeds. Happy to loan to the Brizzy boys if they want a try - gybes like a pig though - one foot wrong and you will be pig rooted off the board!!
