The big 3 pulling ahead with Finian a knot and a half behind and surprising going better in the light (1st first race) than in the heavier stuff (7th last race). The next 5 are usually within a 1/2 knot of each other.
Chris (Slowboat) so far hasn't really been rewarded for his consistancy but if some of the other guys above him have another bad heat he may jump up a couple of spots.
It is surprising that the top guys can put 5% on other world class sailors... it would be like someone winning the 100m sprint by 5m instead of the usual cms.
More of the same in heats 5 and 6.
Bjorn seems to have this one (and this won as well). Though it's really tight at the top (Bjorn, Antoine and Patrik with usually about 1/10 of a knot between them) Bjorn is consistently edging out the other 2.
Finian seems to be 1/2 a knot off the pace. Today the wind is predicted to be lighter so maybe he can turn around the form book as he won the first race which was light.
Although beaten by ChrisL and Hennie yesterday Torsten Luig seems entrenched in 5th with Hennie and Chris fighting over 6th with both on equal points. Although the continually improving John Smalley (GBR) is not far behind. Yesterday he traded places with Chris (5 & 7 vs 6 & 6)and may have his eye on the 6th place overall purse that Hennie and Chris are fighting over. No doubt all three are hoping Torsten will have an off day and they can get into the top 5 but the top 4 are another level... another size!http://www.speedweek.co.za/2007/20070806/walvis2007overall.pdf
Here are the provisionals for Leg 7:
Men
1. Dunkerbeck
2. Albeau
3. Maynard
4. Bredenkamp
5. Diethelm.
6. Smalley
7. Lockwood
8. Luig
9. Adamidis
10.Stein
Women 1. Ghibaudo 2. Jaggi 3. Bredenkamp.
As suspected Dunkerbeck's solidified his place at the top. Hennie's making a move on 5th overall which Torsten Luig probably thought was his but a couple of 8th places in the last 2 heats have made him vulnerable whilst Hennie's step up has left ChrisL to worry about hanging on to 7th instead of challenging for 5th as an improving John Smalley closes in on him in the overall standings.
Overall (with 2 drops)
1... Dunkerbeck.....3.5
2... Albeau...........10
3... Diethelm.........10.7
4... Maynard.........14.7
5... Luig...............28
6... Brendenkamp...30
7... Lockwood.......34
8... Smalley..........35
9... White............41
10.. MacInness.....49
It is all over, not just Namibia but the ISA world title.
From their site..
"The frenchies take it all ! The new world champions are Antoine Albeau and Valerie Ghibaudo. In the production fleet, Patrik Diethelm and Karin Jaggi defended their last years titles. Congratulations !
15:25 Walvis Bay Speedweek is over ! The wind never reached suitable strength, we are now computing the new world ranking. Pricegiving is next, starting at 20:00. Thank you for following the event with us so far !
I am a bit disappointed that Chris Lockwood did not get a mention in any of the reports and I have been searching the pictures and no sign of him there either. What have the ISA got against us Aussies?
I suspect I know the answer to this one, but why is Chris's equipment brands not mentioned at all in the results?
