Please excuse the 8 (or so) months premature question but I have some long service due and would love to get back down to the Pit and have a go at getting some runs in at the smoothest place Ive ever sailed. Think it was summer 87 or 88.
I would love to sail the place again and was wondering what the best size sails and boards would be to bring???
OK, Im nowhere as fit and as strong as I used to be but would like to think I could slightly improve MY stats and have a great time. Everyone up here is so amped about going fast again its great.
Obviously later on down the track there will be lots of info available but Id like to get in early.
many thanks for any info.
Larko.
Larko, Obviously your weight has lots to do with gear size, however common sail size would be between 5.0m. and 6.0m.,, ideal board size would be in the vicinity of 50 litre to 70 litre ( 43cm to 50cm wide ). In the extremes of low or high winds you may be on either side of the above, providing you have the gear with you.
Allan.......
Some (possibly useful...?) stats from the last Fortnite...
You could have sailed 11 out of 15 days (ie: +15knots). There were about 7 days of 25+ knots; of those we had about 4 of +35 peaks. We only had one solid day when the wind swung to the "ideal SW" direction - but that didn't stop Pierre and slowboat going 40+ in the NW direction.
The previous year was about the same amount of sailing / windy days, but had 3 days of ideal direction.
Should also mention... Often one or two guys (other than Al) hire houses for the two weeks -> if you are looking for accommodation, sharing the house is the cheapest / warmest / friendliest solution.
Definitely bring a smaller sail than a 5m, even if it a 3.7m wave sail. If it blows 35-50kts and you are over-sailed and on the beach you will regret it forever! ;-)
Thanks to everyone for the info. Just wanted to get a plan in place early.
I think some of the guys from around here might be going but will definitely be on the lookout for official stuff when it becomes available.
Will be able to bring gear from slalom to speed boards and race sails from 7.8 to 4.6, would this be a good spread??
Thanks again Al, Matt and Andrew.
