Hi guys
I'm really going to make the effort to come down this year and need some advice. I'm 100kg's sailing and although I don't turn well I can hold down the big gear in a line. What I want to know is how many days of sailing would I have missed in the past few years if 4.6 was my smallest sail. Even a 4.6, if I got one, would only be used down there, but if smaller is required I'll organize one.
Your comments are appreciated. Thanks
Hey Jethro,
You shouldn't need any smaller than a 4.6 race sail. In saying that though there could still be the odd day where you'd be out of control in the bigger squalls.
A combo of 2 small sails can be ideal to maximize your chances of not missing out on great conditions. ie./4.6 & 5.4, 5.0 & 5.8.
Are you going down this year Jethro? We've got around 8 Sydneysider's pumped to head on down in early October for a week if you are. Let me know and I can get you some rough details which we'll iron out this week.
All the best,
Sam.
Yeah, I definitely keen to go. I've booked my holidays, awaiting confirmation of dates for the Al Green pilgrimage, so barring late minute disasters, I'm there.
Hi Jethrow
I've been to the last 2 of Al Green's fortnights - and a couple of speedweeks. Unless you only drive for hours or fly in on the basis of a huge weather map you'll find Sandy Point gives you a bit of everything. Chances of you at 100kg needing anything smaller than 5.0 on that particular fortnight are pretty low. We can sit it out together, take your camera. I reckon the spot on 5.8 days, are best, usually get a few of them. Take your 8.0 and a suitable board, the competition is pretty intense on the light wind days. Great event see you there.
It would be pretty rare for you to need anything smaller than a 4.6m race/speed sail. At your weight you would probably be fine is it is a 4.6m wave sail as well. If we do get one of those rare, epic days of 40 knots plus you may need a smaller sail but if it's like that the size of the sail is only one of the issues. ![]()
At 75k I use a 4.4m sail as my smallest but I have a 3.7m wave sail just in case and I have pushing for a Custom 4m Koncept just for those rare epic days (without any joy so far :-)
